At random: "Like the destroyer, the submarine has created its own type of officer and man with language and traditions apart from the rest of the service, and yet at the heart unchangingly of the Service” -- Rudyard Kipling, The Fringes of the Fleet, 1915

STENTZ, Robert Gail, LCDR, USN, Ret., passed away peacefully at his home on September 24, 2017, after a courageous 6 ½ year battle against renal cell carcinoma. Born on November 12, 1942, in Wooster, Ohio. He is survived by his loving wife, Therese Ritter Stentz and his stepchildren: Alicia Vorhaben Trahan (Christian), Ann Vorhaben Delancy (Sean), and Quinn Vorhaben (Tessa). Bob leaves behind his cherished grandchildren: Ava, Merrin, Aidan, Catherine, Griffin, Ethan, Clay, Harrison, Eleanor, and Cassidy. He is also survived by his mother, Phyllis Shank Burdick, son Marc Stentz, and daughter Lorie Eastep, predeceased by his father, Gail Stentz and his brother Donald Lee Stentz. Lieutenant Commander Stentz was most proud of his 21-year career in the Navy. Highlights were serving on Polaris nuclear submarines, 3 tours of duty in Vietnam, and jointly designing the communication systems used by all military forces during both evacuations of Saigon and Phnom Penh, Laos. After retiring from the Navy, Bob enjoyed working in the building industry and as an agent for over 20 years for New York Life. He also became a Certified Financial Planner and was a lifetime member of the Million Dollar Round Table. Most of all, he was passionate about his love for stained glass and enjoyed nothing more than sharing his talent and creativity with others. The family is extremely grateful to the compassionate care shown to Bob during his illness. Special thanks to Dr. Jayne Gurtler, Dr. Eric Jonasch, Dr. David Tran, Toni Rabalais, Dr. Stan Cowley Jr. and Dr. Stan Cowley III., Northlake Pulmonary Associates, and the wonderful staff at MD Anderson, Lakeview Regional Medical Center and St. Tammany Parish Hospital. We are particularly thankful for the end of life care he received through Canon Hospice. Family and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Service on Thursday, September 28, 2017 at 11:00 AM in the J. Garic Schoen Chapel of Jacob Schoen & Son Funeral Home. Visitation will begin at 9:00 AM and continue until Service time. Interment will be at a later date. Condolences may be expressed at www.schoenfh.com.
