RYAN Thomas David, Rear Admiral, USN, (Retired) died peacefully in Summerville, South Carolina, on November 13, 2016 at the age of 77. Tom is survived by his wife, Jane Ann Ryan (Gleixner) of Summerville, SC; his five children Thomas, Jr. (Ellen-Sue), Timothy (Lynn), Jennifer Long (Larry), Jeanette Murphy (Mark), and Joanne Stallman (Bob); and his sixteen grandchildren Elizabeth and Andrew Ryan; Timothy, Grace and Jack Ryan; Rebecca, Nicholas and Barrett Long; Ryan, Flannery, Cormac, Finnian, and Onora Murphy; and Jane, Annmarie, and Molly Stallman. He is preceded in death by his sister Diane and brothers Patrick, Daniel, and Gerald of Buffalo, NY. Tom was born on July 4, 1939 in Buffalo, New York, to Thomas Leo Ryan and Virginia Marguerita Ryan (Stoffel). He earned his Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Notre Dame in 1961, and his Master's Degree in Nuclear Engineering in 1964 and his Doctorate in Nuclear Engineering in 1974 from the University of Michigan. Tom's college sweetheart, Jane, attended Saint Mary's College, South Bend, IN. Jane's brother, Barrett Gleixner, introduced Tom and Jane during their sophomore year, and they were married a year after graduation in 1962. Upon graduation and commissioning in the Navy, Tom immediately reported to the destroyer USS Barry (DD933) homeported at Newport, RI. The highlight of his first tour was participation in the blockade of Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. Following his initial sea duty and marriage to Jane, the couple moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan for his graduate work at the University of Michigan as a Navy Burke Scholar. His Navy career in the submarine force spanned 34 years and included command of the USS Batfish (SSN-681), Submarine Development Squadron Twelve, and as the Gulf War commander of Submarine Group Eight in Naples, Italy. He retired in 1995 from his final tour as the Director of Operational Test and Evaluation. Tom earned the highest peacetime military award, the Defense Distinguished Service Medal. Following retirement, he worked as General Manager for Commonwealth Edison in Downers Grove, Illinois before accepting a position as Director for the Nuclear Energy Institute in Washington, DC. He finished his civilian career as a Senior Consultant for Cortana Corporation in Falls Church, VA where he was responsible for helping the US Navy obtain the latest technology in undersea warfare. Tom was known for his leadership and dedication to all who worked for him. The family would like to thank the caregivers and staff at The Village at Summerville for their dedication in caring for Tom in his final year of life. The celebration of Tom's life will occur on October 23, 2017 at 12:45 pm at the Old Post Chapel on Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall, followed by his interment at Arlington National Cemetery. McCOY, Francis "Buck" Patrick, 78, of San Diego, Calif., died Saturday, Oct. 14, 2017, in Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego. He was born Dec. 17, 1938, in Brackenridge to Dorothy and Francis McCoy and lived in San Diego for many years. Francis was preceded in death by his parents, sister Patricia, brother Dennis and son Raymond. He leaves behind his wife of 30 years, Pat McCoy; daughters Kellie and Barbara; a brother, Edward McCoy, of Natrona Heights; eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Francis graduated from San Diego State University and was a senior chief petty officer in the Navy. He served in the Navy for 20 years as a submariner, traveling all over the world. After his Navy career, he worked as an educational consultant. He loved collecting Navy and submarine memorabilia and working on and owning classic cars. He and his wife enjoyed traveling to Hawaii, Europe, Barbados and many other places. He also was an avid Pittsburgh Pirates, Steelers and Penguins fan. Interment will be at Miramar Navy Cemetery in San Diego. All services were private. A celebration of life will be held at their church next week. CLARKE, Jerry, 77, passed away peacefully Tuesday, October 17, 2017 following a long battle with cancer. He was born in Chesterfield County, VA on February 19, 1940. Following graduation from Thomas Dale High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy spending most of his six years of service on submarines. The highlight of his time in the Navy was meeting his future wife, Joan, while he was stationed in Connecticut. After his service, Jerry earned an Industrial Engineering degree from Virginia Tech. He began his professional career at Newport News Shipbuilding, then moved to Newport News Industrial and eventually left to co-found Energy Services Group in Williamsburg. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alison and Millie Clarke. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Joan; their three children, son David Clarke (Martha); Daughters, Suzann Balog (Ken); Beth Stewart (Michael); sister, Sharon Broaddus (George); and six grandchildren Alexandra Balog, Nicholas Balog; Ellen Clarke, Andrew Clarke; Duncan Stewart, Ethan Stewart. Jerry was an avid golfer and long time member of the Golden Horseshoe Golf Course. He was proud to have served in the U.S. Navy. He was honored to have served on the Virginia Tech Engineering Committee of 100, the Ut Prosim Society, Academy of Distinguished Alumni of Virginia Tech, the Kiwanis Club of Williamsburg, the Elks Club of Sebastian, FL, The American Legion in Sebastian, FL, Saint Sebastian Catholic Church, and St Bede Catholic Church in Williamsburg. Jerry's playfulness, sense of humor, storytelling and generosity had a lasting impression on all who met him. He dearly loved all his family, nieces, nephews and grandchildren. The friendships he and Joan made lasted decades and he was always ready to make new ones. He will be terribly missed by family and friends but his influence and impact will survive for eternity. Services will be held on Monday, October 23 at 11am at St. Bede's Catholic Church on Ironbound Road with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, it is kindly requested that a donation be made in Jerry's name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or a charity of your choice. MEADOR, Louis Eugene, Sr., 90, passed away October 14, 2017 from complications of Alzheimer's Disease. Born in Breckenridge County, KY on December 10, 1926, Mr. Meador served in the U.S. Navy Submarine Service during World War II [USS Raton]. He was in the insurance industry in Tennessee and Georgia. Mr. Meador was preceded in death by the mother of his children, Lucille Hamilton Meador, and is survived by his second wife, Rachel Shell Meador; children: Terry duPont (Arlene); Donna Henson (Dick); Gene Meador (Judy); Barry Lloyd (Amy); Beth Martin (Tom). He leaves eleven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. Memorial service for Mr. Meador will be held at Dacula United Methodist Church on Friday, October 27, 2017, with visitation at 4:00 o'clock, service at 5:00 o'clock. Private burial at a later date.
