At random: The late Capt. Don Ulmer, USN SS (Ret.), and noted submarine author, began his military career by enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1947 and in 1949 while serving as an electrical technician E-4 aboard the submarine USS Clamagore, he was transferred to the Naval Academy. When he asked his commanding officer why he was being sent to Annapolis, the skipper replied, "I don't think you're smart enough to make E-5 and I need the bunk space." Ulmer graduated in 1954 and in 1967 returned to command Clamagore, possibly the only officer to command a U.S. warship having served on it as an enlisted man.

MITCHELL, Paul R., 84, of El Dorado, AR, died on Thursday, October 19, 2017 at Timberlane Health and Rehabilitation. Born on June 5, 1933 in Camden, AR; he was the son of Lutch Mitchell and Annie Robertson Mitchell. Paul was a member of The First United Methodist Church of El Dorado where he sang in the choir. He retired after 37 years from Lion Oil Pipeline. Paul served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict on the submarine USS Razorback. He enjoyed watching western movies and in his youth he enjoyed camping and boating. His greatest love was spending time with his grandchildren. Paul was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, James Robertson Mitchell and Harry L. Mitchell; a sister, Vera Chamlee and his son, Brian P. Mitchell. Survivors are his wife of 62 years, Kay Pool Mitchell; a son, Brent A. (Jill) Mitchell of El Dorado; daughters, Paula (Bobby) Bilo of El Dorado, Donna (Duane) Robinson, Karen (Doug) Griffin of Lake Charles; a sister, Betty Ann Greening; along with seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Sunday, October 22, 2017 at Young's. Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m., Monday, October 23, 2017 in the Chapel of Young's Funeral Directors with Rev. Keith Dodson officiating. Interment will follow at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens under the direction of Young's Funeral Directors.
