Trying to research some stuff for PigBoats and came across this bit of drama for a S-36 sailor back in 1923. thought I'd pass it along.

April 7, 1923; SAN FRANCISCO, April 7.—San Francisco police to-night accused Clarence B. Hicks, a sailor of the crew of the United States submarine S-36, of murder in connection with the death of Rabbi Alfred G. Lafee. They announced the seaman had been identified as the man last seen with the rabbi when the latter was assaulted in a San Francisco hotel. Hicks Is held at the Mare Island Navy Yard for the civil authorities.

Story follow on 3 weeks later:

Clarence B. Hicks, naval yoeman, was freed of charges in connection with the killing of Rabbi Alfred G Lafee in a San Francisco hotel three weeks ago, following the alleged confession of Gladwell G. Richardson, 19, navy deserter, in Phoenix, Arizona.

I'm sure that was one relieved swabby to be turned free.!!!
