Subject: 1934 Newspaper report of war with Japan.

Again, looking for something different and discovered this 1934 newspaper reporting of going to war with Japan.
I know the link looks scary but it just goes to an on-line pdf file.

This is an interesting article. I have never heard this before now.

A check of newspapers from January 11 and 12, 1934 shows this was a front page story across America.

So, how was December 7, 1941 a surprise to our government?

This admiral even talked openly in his speech about a race war between Japan and America; but, did not live to see the outcome of the war.

I know. I was very surprised when reading this.
Six years later all hell breaks loose. Everyone is caught flat footed? I'd say hardly.
Looks like short term memory is hell... at the end, 55 million dead!

Quite a historical news find there. Japan was not only sabre rattling against the USA and Russia, but within three years would go to war with China in 1937. Back then they had plenty of megalomaniacs like Tojo, Hitler and Mussolini waiting in the wings with aspirations to dominate the world. Can't help comparing that situation which ended in a World War to the current stalemates with North Korea, Syria and Iran and their inflexible leaders. Deja Vu in many respects and none of it looking good at the moment.
