Looks like some sailors are having fun with what is probably a new guy. Kid in center has his eyes closed. Looks like some PO's and Seamen First Class pulling some pranks. Could be sub crew. The USS L-11 is to the right and the photo taken on the deck of the USS Tonopah a sub tender.

You sure about they're being aboard a Sub Tender? Those look like pretty hefty cannons. Did they have those on early Tenders? New kid in the department?

How dare you infer that members of a fine upstanding Submarine Crew would harass, intimidate, initiate or in any way cause trauma to the mental or physical well being of a fellow crew member. Heck, next you might infer Submariners would attempt to take advantage of any available females in any port they were visiting. The very thought of such goings on is despicable.

The USS Tonopah (M-8 later BM-8) was a monitor. It was originally named Nevada but was changed to allow BB36 to be named Nevada. The gun probably was a 12".

Take a close look. Are my ancient eyes deceiving me? They all have 3 stripes on their collars, but only 2 stripes on their sleeve cuffs. What gives? Was that the way it was back then? 2 stripes until you make third class?

That is the USS Tonopah the former Nevada M-8 later BM-8.
The monitors had been turned into early sub tenders due to their low freeboard. See the photo and the subs tied along side.

Interesting, I never knew the first tenders were converted from monitors:

I realize the thread was about the rag hat getting some 'attention' but was interested in the ship so Googled it.
Go here if you want a little history.: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Nevada_(BM-8)#Design
Seems like her tour(s) of tender duty included tours up and down the east coast and to the Azores where she was tender to the K boats.

That pop gun in the pic appears to be 1 of 2 12inch rifles in a dual turret.

The guys with the white stripe around their right arms are Seaman Firsts. The short guy behind the "Kid" is a left arm Petty Officer, (you can see his "crow) on his arm). The guy all the way to the right is a Fireman First as he has a red stripe around his left arm.

I have not researched cuff strips. I will see what I can find. May take some time.
