At random: A church in Kyoto, Japan calls its congregation to worship with a bell from a submarine. The bell, from the submarine USS RAY was purchased for the church, and was transported to Yokosuka, Japan by another submarine, the USS RONQUIL.

BAIRD, Arthur Nile, 81, of Bradenton Beach, Fla., passed away on October 21, 2017, in Wilmington, DE, in the care of his loving family. Ted was born on February 5, 1936 in Idaho Falls, Idaho to Roland and Edna Hayes-Baird. Ted's childhood was spent in various towns in Idaho and Utah. He graduated from Butte High School in Arco, ID, in 1954. He then enlisted in the Navy Submarine group and served a total of 20 years during the Cold War on five different submarines including: Wahoo (1954-56), Corporal (1958-59), Snook 1964-66), Lafayette (1969-72), and William H Bates (1973-74). He retired from the Navy in 1974 having achieved the rank of Master Chief. He briefly attended college at Idaho State College in Pocatello, ID, on a Phillips Petroleum scholarship, pursuing a degree in electronic engineering. Ted worked for Westinghouse as a Nuclear Engineer where he spent seven years in South Korea until 1986 as site manager of the Kori Nuclear Power facility. He moved to Millville, NJ, in 1987 and retired from Westinghouse in 1996. After retirement, Ted loved ballroom and country-line dancing with his wife, Luanne, as well as, playing his organ. He was a member of the American Legion and Moose Lodge. Ted will be fondly remembered by family and friend’s worlds wide and especially those at the Sandpiper Resort and in the Bradenton area. Ted was preceded in death by his father and mother, Roland and Edna, his older brother, Roland "Ronny" Hayes, his eldest son, Arthur Nile Jr., and his grandchild Andrew John "AJ" Baird. Ted is survived by his wife of 16 years, Luanne of Bradenton, Florida; his children, Roye (Cyndie) Baird of DeFuniak Springs, FL; Brian (Cheri) Baird of Tucson, AZ; KC (Nanette) Baird of Clearfield, UT; John (Christine) Baird of Idaho Falls, ID; Kathy (Oscar) Crober of Lockhart, TX; Reginald Baird (Bill Murphy) of San Francisco, CA; Regan (Cindy Kos) Baird of Marlton, NJ; Hart (David) Rossmeisl of Fort Washington, PA; Hayes (Mindy Courier) Baird of Clearwater, FL; Myles (Melissa Cavazos) Baird of Dallas, TX; Patti (Albert Marcacci) Schmid of Vineland, NJ; Michelle Ernst of Vineland, NJ; Mark (Amy) Ernst of Wheat Ridge, CO; Lisa (Joe) Bybel of Millville, NJ; Marlene (Curtis) Cassotis of Kernersville, NC; Lynn (Matt) Hanna of Wilmington, DE; and Eric Ernst of Vineland, NJ; his siblings, Bruce (Harlene) Baird of Mud Lake, ID; Charlotte Baird of La Verkin, UT; Mike (Patsy) Baird of Idaho Falls, ID; Rick (Karen) Baird of Tremonton, UT; 19 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. LARIMER, Neil M., died suddenly during his daily workout Dec. 5, 2017. Neil was born to Neil M. and Dolores (Vensel) Larimer on February 21, 1957 at Camp LeJeune, NC. He went to Mt. Lebanon High School in Pittsburgh, PA and graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1979, serving on submarines until 1985, retiring as a Commander. Neil had a successful business career becoming VP of Global Sales for Mallinkrodt Pharmaceuticals. He and his family moved to San Antonio in 2003. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Kathleen McCamley Larimer and their children Ryan Larimer (USMMA 2009), Dr. Gregory J. Larimer, and Mary Kate Larimer (UT Austin 2016) and fiancé Christopher Jackson. He is survived by his parents of Tampa, FL, sister and brother-in-law Wendy and Chris Arpaia of Dallas, and brother Bret Larimer of Fort Collins, CO. Neil played tennis at Fair Oaks Ranch CC. PEACOCK, William Charles, IV, 69, of Dothan, Alabama passed away December 2, 2017 at his home. He was born February 20, 1948 in Chicago, Illinois. Bill was preceded in death by his mother, Barbara Cavett Peacock. Bill was a Navy Veteran having served from 1968 - 1976. He loved telling stories of his years serving on a nuclear submarine. Bill was an avid fisherman for years before his health declined. He preferred off shore salt water fishing and loved occasional tournament fishing too. He was past president of the Dothan ballroom dance club. Theresa and Bill were active members for years and cherished those times and friendships. Bill is survived by his wife of 33 years, Theresa Ingle Peacock of Dothan, AL; two sons, Robert 'Bobby' Bruner and Rebekah Savage of Birmingham, AL and John Peacock of Atlanta, GA; his mother-in-law, Alberta Ingle of Bonifay, FL; a sister-in-law, Peggy Pelham and Jerry of Dothan, AL; his father, William Charles Peacock, III; one brother, Robert 'Bob' Peacock and Penny; one sister, Barbara Piecinsky. A celebration of life will be held 10:00 AM Saturday, December 16, 2017 at Tabernacle United Methodist Church, 4205 South Brannon Stand Road, Taylor, AL. Memorialization was by cremation with interment in the Bonifay Cemetery. Peel Funeral Home of Bonifay, Florida in charge of arrangements. SEADER, Lamarr A., 78, of Milton, FL, passed away on December 7, 2017. Lamarr commenced his journey of life 21 January 1939. He served 31 honorable years in the U.S. Navy retiring as a QMCM (SS) having served sixteen years in the Submarine Force. He graduated from the University of Maryland, Heidelberg, Germany receiving his BS degree. He married his best friend and soul mate, Kathleen and after retirement he enjoyed real estate and traveling. His journey in life ended after a battle with cancer. He is now on Eternal Patrol safely with his Lord. Buried at Barrancas National Cemetery. Published in Pensacola News Journal on Dec. 13, 2017


SMITH, Steven Douglas, 56, of Danielsville, GA, formerly of Muskegon, passed away Tues., Dec. 5, 2017 at Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center in Georgia. Steve was born in Grand Rapids August 30, 1961. He served proudly in the United States Navy for ten years in the submarine division aboard the USS Darter. He was currently employed with Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center as a security guard. Steve enjoyed watching movies and was interested in technology and photography. He will be fondly remembered for his sense of humor and kind heart. He is survived by his wife, Diana Smith of Danielsville; step-daughters, Lainie Patterson of FL and Heather Patterson of GA; granddaughter, Vivian of GA; mother, Barbara Smith of Cadillac, formerly of Muskegon; brothers, Greg (Kris) Smith of Holland and Tom (Jamie) Smith of Muskegon and a sister, Teri (Ross) Meyering of Cadillac. Steve was preceded in death by his father, Jack R. Smith. Published in Muskegon Chronicle on Dec. 10, 2017


STURGIS, David Herman, 73, of Panama City, passed away Sunday, December 3, 2017 at his home. David was born on November 17, 1944 in Augusta, GA. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1965 and in 1968 was chosen for the Naval Enlisted Scientific Educational Program and was commissioned as an officer in 1973 after graduating from North Carolina State University with a degree in mechanical engineering. He then served as a Submarine Weapons Officer and Navigator and finished his career as the Executive Officer at the Charleston Naval Submarine Training Center, retiring as a Lieutenant Commander in 1985. David had strong convictions and fought his whole life for things he believed in. He passed this trait along to his daughter, Erin, and his son, Doug. David was one of the founding members of Grand Square Rounds where he and his wife, Sandy, were teachers and cuers. He was also a long-time member of the Swinging Squares Dance Club where he loved to "square up". He is survived by his wife, Sandra Sanders Sturgis of Panama City; his sons, Douglas James Sturgis of Katy, Texas and Paul Wesley Brown of Colfax, California; his daughter, Erin Sturgis-Pascale of Copake, New York; twelve grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
