Something new with the Royal Navy doing guard duty at four royal palaces during the coming months. Traditionally this duty is reserved for the five Guards Regiments, the Gurkha's and other major Army regiments. The Army do these ceremonials so many times they could do them in their sleep but it is all a new departure for sailors. Must admit they did a pretty good job of it considering the fact they seldom ever are called upon to march and this was all to be done in the public eye.

One soldier from the Grenadier Guards wasn’t too worried they might be upstaged.

He said:

"We've been doing it for 300 years. It's about time we let [the Navy] have a turn."

A former boss of mine once said"Submarine sailors don't march,we stagger smartly".

Why does the Officer swing his arm 180 out from the troops?

Interesting video.

Marched in boot camp and never again. At Damneck A School I read a manual that stated we were supposed mach from the barracks to class.

The base was run by submarine chiefs and 1st Class POs so marching was never expected of us.

Walt, That was the standard bearer. Where everyone else had their rifles in one hand, he was bearing the standard in the other. That showed he was seemingly 180 out, but was actually in step.

I noticed that there were submariners at Windsor Castle. Funny that they didn't act like the submariners I know. They acted like they were, ... I won't say it without choking.

Notice it took army personnel to teach the sailors how to march. We're SAILORS, We don't march. We have our sea-legs, therefore we stagger!

We are all in another time and place with totally different Navy's than the ones we served in. During my time in boats, no self-respecting submarine rating would have volunteered for that duty or any other similar kiss-arse duties such as being a member of the Royal Yacht Britannia's crew. If push came to shove they could always have been ordered to participate of course as in state funerals/weddings etc. Having said that, once committed, those few sun-dodgers that were at Windsor were just obeying and following their Army instructors commands or woe would betide them, as Coldstream Guards DI's take no prisoners or tolerate dropouts. Unfortunately, it's no longer a way of life but basically another job. Hard to get used to, I know, but that's the way it is now.

I haven't heard the term "SunDodger" in a very long time. The Royal Oak was in Charleston and I took some of them shooting at the base skeet range. They referred to me as a "Sundodger".
