MATHER, Clayton Dudley, 92, of South Windsor, beloved husband of Louise (Corsair) Mather, passed peacefully on January 10, 2018. Chuck was born October 13, 1925, and left high school early to join the US Navy at 17, in which he served as a submariner in the Pacific in World War II. He qualified in submarines in USS Burrfish (SS-312) in 1945 and was TM3(SS0 when released by the Navy in 1946. He married Louise Corsair on January 30, 1948, and they would have celebrated their 70th anniversary at the end of January. He also leaves four children, Anne Brzezicki, (Michael); Mary Lou Jenkins (Brian); Richard (Stephanie); and Tom, and four grandchildren, Casey, Catherine, Nathaniel and Sam. He was predeceased by his brother Melvin. After the war he obtained his high school diploma and earned a Bachelor's degree in Business from the University of Conn. in 1950. He founded and ran C. Mather Company making custom counter tops since 1958, pioneering several techniques in fabrication. He was a long-time supporter of 4-H Youth programs, especially Hartford County 4-H Camp, including serving as president of the Camp Board of Trustees. During his tenure he ensured that 4-H Camp remained accessible for the youth in those programs. He was a loyal friend and the go-to person for problem solving. He enjoyed taking his family fishing and sightseeing along the coast. His family will receive friends on Sunday, January 14, 2018, from 2-5 p.m., at the Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home, 419 Buckland Rd., South Windsor. A graveside service with Military Honors will be held on Tuesday, January 16, 2018, 12 Noon, at the Connecticut State Veteran's Cemetery on Bow Lane in Middletown. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Hartford County 4-H Camp c/o Elsie Woolam, 1225 Main St., South Windsor, CT 06074. STEELE, James Davis, 92, of North Fort Myers, Fl. passed away December 29, 2017. He was born in Quaker City, Ohio, the son of Chester and Della Steele. After graduating from high school in 1943, he entered the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific during WWII aboard the submarine USS Rock until 1946. After the war he taught middle school and became a principal and later earned his PHD at Ohio University and became part of a USAID project in Vietnam. After returning from Vietnam in 1969, he returned to teach at Youngstown State. During this time he became part of USAID educational project in Botswana, Africa where he and his wife Judy lived for 2 years. Upon retirement they moved to Fl. in 1985 and in 1986 returned to Swaziland, Africa for a six month project. Jim enjoyed reading history or sports and was a great story teller. He was influential in starting the North Fort Myers Softball League and also served on several committees in the Lake Fairway community as well as gate guard. He enjoyed golf as well, however he is best remembered for his tuba playing, having played in several different bands. He is survived by his wife Judy (nee Miller) Steele; children Jeffrey Steele (Barbara) and Jane Farrell (Mark); grandchildren, Elizabeth, Peter and Jennifer Steele. A celebration of Life service will be held January 13 at 1:00 pm at Holy Trinity Presbyterian Church, 19251 North Tamiami Trail, North Fort Myers, Fl. with internment of ashes in Arlington Cemetery, Washington D.C. at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Holy Trinity Presbyterian Church or Hope Hospice, 2430 Diplomat Pkwy E., Cape Coral, Fl. 33909.
