At random: In their history, submarines were called by many names such as 'eel boats', 'plunging boats', 'devil divers', and 'pig boats'. Technically, and by size, the submarine is a ship, but it has been called a boat since its earliest days, and the term is steeped in tradition. Submariners almost invariably call their ships 'boats".

Subject: Question on Marines

My part time cleaning lady's son joined the Marines.  He's 30 and was working as an accountant and going to school at Cal State Los Angeles.  He went through boot camp and was at Recon and ITB (?) school but did so bad at close order drill they're making him go through boot camp again.  He's got to be the oldest Marine in boot?

I was asking her so many questions about him that she didn't kmow that she hooked me up with him on Facebook.  He actually wants to see combat, but he'll be involved with accounting if he gets through boot camp again.  I assume accounting normally precludes combat.  I thought the young man would be upset about being assigned to accounting, but evidently he sees potential in being assigned there.

I'm unfamiliar with anything Marine, or somebody being sent back to boot.  He's pretty demoralized about it, but admits he has a big problem with close order drill.  Being sent back to boot seems pretty drastic to my unknowing brain.

I know we have a few hear knowledgeable in Marine hitches.
