At random: “What wordy praise can one give such men as these; men who … follow unhesitatingly when in the vicinity of minefields so long as there is the possibility of targets … Men who flinch not with the fathometer ticking off two fathoms beneath the keel … Men who will fight to the last bullet and then start throwing the empty shell cases. These are submariners.” - Eugene Fluckey in his final war patrol report aboard USS Barb

Atlantic 01/22/68: The Israeli diesel submarine Dakar with 52 aboard disappears in the eastern Mediterranean 250 miles off Israel. The USS Turner (DDR-834), USS Conyngham (DDG-17),and USS CharlesH. Roan (DD-853) are subsequently diverted to search for the missing submarine, but it is not found.

Atlantic 01/27/68: The French diesel submarine Minerve with 52 aboard sinks in the
Mediterranean off Toulon.
(note) The Dakar was found off the coast of Crete. This "sinking" is shrouded in secrecy, but there is a conspiracy theory of the french and Israeli boats being lost. Some information is out there.

Atlantic 01/22/73: The USS Batfish (SSN-681) suffers bottom damage after running hard
aground at Charleston, South Carolina, while proceeding to sea. The submarine is pulled free by tugs and returns to the dock.

Atlantic 01/23/81: The USS Birmingham (SSN-695) suffers a failed sonar dome while
operating in the Mediterranean and is ordered into Gibraltar for damage assessment. On 30
January the ship is in Gibraltar for repairs.

1-23-1968 USS Pueblo (AGER 2) is seized by North Korean forces in the Sea of Japan.

The Pueblo thing had us sitting off Wonson freeing our asses off under the floating ice in the Sea of Japan. Ice broke the top of the #2 scope off. 9 days in warm Guam to get a new one. Back to the ice then.

You mean you were cold? I can't believe the Flasher didn't have modern day heating units...

Yes, it was cold. We had heating but the boat had been framed and about 14 feet were added besides who knew what we had turned off for quiet on station.
