ABELE, James Herbert, passed away peacefully at his home from cancer on Jan. 13, 2018. He was surrounded by family. Born in Philadelphia, PA Apr. 18, 1935, the son of George and Martha Abele, he served on diesel submarines in the United States Navy from 1954-1957. He married Therese Love on February 22, 1958. Jim graduated from LaSalle University in 1964. The couple moved to Walnut Creek, CA in 1974. Jim started his career with Standard Pressed Steel and retired as a systems analyst for the University of California. Jim is preceded in death by his wife of 52 years Therese, his grandson Ryan, his brother George and sister, Marion. Jim is survived by his sister Ruth of Missouri; his six sons Jim (Christine) of San Diego, Jack (Wendy) of Concord, Mike (Kim) of Clayton, Dave (Lori) of Walnut Creek, Joe (Laura) of Sherman Oaks, Jerry (Seana) of Livermore, and 12 grandchildren. Jim was very active with Walnut Creek Little League and the Walnut Creek transportation commission. He loved live music, especially the work of the East Bay Banjo Club. A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30am Saturday January 27, 2018 at St. John Vianney Church in Walnut Creek. Published in East Bay Times on Jan. 22, 2018


AUSTIN, Brandon Kevin, 35, of Townsend, DE passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones following a courageous battle with cancer on Friday January 19, 2018. He was born on October 20, 1982 in Wilmington, Delaware. He grew up in Townsend, Delaware and graduated in 2000 from Middletown High School where he excelled at football and wrestling. Brandon worked for his father's construction company until deciding to enlist in the US Navy in 2012 where he served honorably and achieved the rank of Petty Officer 2nd Class as an Information Technologist on the USS Chicago, a Los Angles class submarine stationed in, Yigo, Guam. While in Guam, he loved to travel to exotic locations of the south pacific. Brandon proudly served his country, as the Navy was his calling. While home and with his family, Brandon enjoyed going to the movies with his mom and going to the renaissance fair together. He also enjoyed fishing with his father and brothers and unwinding with video games. Most admirably and true to his character, Brandon was a warrior who continued to stay positive through his fight with cancer. Brandon is survived by his mother Kathy Alfree of Dover, DE and father & stepmother Michael and MaryEllen Austin of Townsend; brothers Spike Austin of Townsend and Louie and his wife Sara Austin of Smyrna; and Grandmother, Joyce Alfree of Bear. Funeral service will be held on Friday, January 26, 2018 at Townsend Free Will Baptist Church, 4519 DuPont Pkwy, Townsend, DE 19734 at 1PM. A viewing will be held on Thursday, January 25th at Townsend Free Will Baptist Church from 6-8pm, and again on Friday from 12-1pm. Interment immediately following services in Townsend Cemetery.
