LENHART, Mark McKown, of Lyme, passed away on March 30, 2018, at Yale New Haven Hospital, after a brief illness.
He was born on Feb. 8, 1933, in Florence, S.C., to Delanson and Alice (McKown) Lenhart. He was a 1957 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and went on to serve on the USS Boston before entering the Submarine Service until his honorable discharge in 1964. He then worked for Corning Glass Works and Stone & Webster Engineering until his retirement. Mark is survived by his wife of 59 years, Sara Sibley Lenhart; three children, Alice, Avery and Mark S. Lenhart; seven grandchildren; and his brother, Ross. Mark was a volunteer with the Common Good Gardens of Old Saybrook. He loved nature and the water, and he was an avid gardener and painter. He also enjoyed visits to Cape Cod with his children and grandchildren.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Common Good Gardens, 336 Main St., Saybrook, CT 06475. A private memorial service will be held later in the spring. Published in The Day on Apr. 3, 2018


PETERSON, George E., 87, son of Alice and Captain George Peterson USN Ret., passed away at New London Rehabilitation in Waterford, on March 31, 2018. George grew up in New London, was a graduate of Bulkley High School, Class of 1949, and the Naval Academy Class of 1953. George served on a destroyer in the Korean conflict and in submarines in New London and on the west coast. He worked for Shell Oil Co. in San Francisco and in insurance here on the east coast. George is survived by his brother, Jon Peterson of Waterford; his niece, Karen Rutledge of Haddam; and cousin, Susan Holmes of Falmouth, Maine. A private memorial will be held at a later date. Thomas L. Nielan & Sons Funeral Home of New London, is assisting the family. Published in The Day on Apr. 3, 2018



CHASE, James Edward, of Athens, IL, passed away on Saturday, March 31, 2018 at Memorial Hospice at Heritage in Springfield, IL.
He is survived by his wife, Ellen (Sale) Chase; children, Teresa (David) Reiser, Lisa (John) Downey, MaryBeth (Jim) Kunzer, and Matt (Jo) Sale; and grandchildren, Hannah, Eli, & Maureen Reiser, Elizabeth & Sarah Downey, Madison, Emily, & Chase Kunzer, and Mason Sale. Also survived by Roxanna Martin, mother of his children. Jim is preceded in death by his brothers, Harry (Mary Alice) & Gary (Louise) Chase; and his parents, Arthur & Ruth Chase.He was born on February 16, 1937 in Henry, Illinois the son of Arthur and Ruth (Hall) Chase. Jim was raised in Tiskilwa, Illinois. He graduated from Tiskilwa High School in 1956 and then served for the U.S. Navy for four years. During his service he was on the submarine, USS Odax (SS-484). Jim was the manager of the Sohigro Fertilizer Plant in Greenview, IL and was a salesman of chemical application equipment for Westlake Equipment Company in Riverton, IL. He finished his career at the Secretary of State in Springfield, IL. Upon retirement, he enjoyed designing and building custom furniture for family and friends. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, camping and woodworking. Jim enjoyed being outdoors working in the yard and garden. He especially loved being with his family. He was a member of the Athens United Methodist Church and Walnut Masonic Lodge #653. A celebration of life open house will be held on Saturday, April 7th from 11 am – 2 pm at the Athens United Methodist Church in the Upper Room with a prayer service at noon. Lunch will be provided. Memorials can be given to Memorial Hospice at Heritage in Springfield. Mott & Henning Funeral Home is assisting the family. On-line condolences can be shared at www.mottandhenning.com.
