At random: Among the 'first' that Electric Boat Division has introduced into American submarines, have been the marine Diesel engine, the perfected use of the storage battery, the combination of battery and internal combustion engine, and the world's first adaptation of nuclear energy to propulsion in the USS NAUTILUS.

SNYDER, Charles Edward., 91, a La Jolla resident since 1974. passed away peacefully of natural causes after a short hospitalization at Scripps Memorial on April 14, 2018. Chuck was born in Montague, MI on April 20, 1926. He was one of eight children, son of a horticulturist and merchant; both his parents were born in Michigan, from German immigrants who settled the area. Growing up, Chuck was busy taking on odd jobs during the Depression. During World War II, he was a submariner in Relief Crews CSS-45, CSD-162, CSD-161, and CSD-62. He reported to USS Billfish (SS-286) in December 45 and was S1c when released by the Navy in April 1946. As a sailor, he also was at the Armistice signing in Tokyo Bay, 1945. Chuck attended the University of Colorado and was in the Sigma Chi fraternity. While studying engineering and geology, as well as adventuring as a smoke jumper and working in various trades, he became an inventor. While in the Denver area, Chuck met Joan Stevenson of Salina, KS; a graphic artist working in various fields including geological-related. They wed on August 29, 1953, in the Salina Presbyterian Church. Living in Denver and making lifelong friends over 21 years there, the couple went skiing on Sundays, had a child, later built a house, while Chuck started a business based on his inventions. Chuck enjoyed hunting, golfing and tennis. In 1960, Chuck built a building for operating the manufacturing company. As business grew, pet hospital cages called intensive care units were among the innovations added to the product line. Moving to La Jolla in 1974, Chuck then developed a system with panels and gates for boarding kennels and humane societies. He kept close ties with the company and friends in Denver by frequent travel. The company has continued to grow, adding a second headquarters and expanding marketing worldwide, and yet hasn't changed the strong core values that Chuck instilled of providing useful products for practitioners in the pet care industry. Chuck had the foresight to move his family to the perfect spot to build a house in La Jolla, and the local area became the center for living out Chuck and Joan's golden years. Chuck is survived by his loving wife; and son, Charlie, Jr., who now runs Snyder Mfg. Co. His friends and family will remember him as one always ready for adventure, telling tales and always lucky.
