SMITH, Addison Russell, 92, passed away peacefully after a long period of ill health on June 7, 2018. He was born in East Boothbay, Maine on October 30, 1925, in the same bed, in the same room and in the same old Victorian home where his mother was born. He was the only child of the late Russell C. Smith and Ruth Virginia Adams Smith. He was a World War II veteran of the US Naval Submarine Service [CSD-121, Pampanito, Caiman] and was authorized to wear 5 ribbons and the submarine combat pin. He qualified in submarines in USS Pampanito (SS-383) in 1945 and was TM2(SS) when released by the Navy. He was a graduate of Pratt High School in Essex, CT class of 1934. He was named for his paternal grandfather, Dr. Addison R. Smith who was co-founder of the former Knox Hospital, Rockland, ME. His maternal grandfather Franck C. Adams was a third-generation boat builder operating out of E. Boothbay, ME. He spent his working years involved in the printing and manufacturing of business forms starting with UARCO, INC. in their Deep River, CT and Oakland, CA plants and ending his career with the Courier Citizen Corporation's "forms division" in Lowell, MA. Growing up among the treasures of previous generations in E. Boothbay, ME, he acquired a lifelong enthusiasm for antiques and related memorabilia, and in his spare time became a collector and dealer. He was also an avid bowler and card player, loved being near or on the water, doing crosswords, attending estate auctions and working on woodcarvings. After moving from E. Boothbay to Essex, CT at an early age, he never lost his love for his birthplace, its rockbound shorelines, quaint village atmosphere and the sea, returning on summer vacations and holidays whenever possible during his lifetime. During retirement years, he devoted a great deal of time gathering and recording family history along with specific memories as told to him by his mother. He leaves his wife of 39 years, Patricia Elder Smith of Deltona, FL, a son Russell of Deland, FL, a son Christopher and daughter in law Sabrina, a daughter Wendy, granddaughters; Emma Ruth, twins Sascha and Olivia, Grandsons; John and William, all of Perth, Western Australia, granddaughter Vanessa of the Netherlands and Great-grandson of the Netherlands. He was predeceased by his former wife Frances DeRenne Alexander Smith, a step-daughter Deborah Alexander and a grandson Jacob Flentri. At Addison's request, there will be no service and burial will be at the family's convenience at Riverside Cemetery, Yarmouth, Maine. BISHOP, Harold Paul, 91, died peacefully on June 3, 2018 at the E.T. York Hospice Care Center in Gainesville, FL, surrounded by his loving family, after a 2-year battle with acral melanoma. Born in Sacramento, CA, he spent much of his early life in Walla Walla, WA, working as a ranch hand in his teenage years to help support his family. At 17, he volunteered for the Navy in WWII and served on a submarine until he was injured, spending a year at Chelsea Naval Hospital until his discharge. After serving as a civilian merchant marine traveling to the Far East, he returned to the Northwest to complete his bachelor and doctorate degrees at Washington State University on the GI Bill, earning a Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology. His first teaching and research position was at Tufts University in Medford, MA, where he met his wife, Josette Lievre, a recent transplant from Porrentruy, Switzerland. They spent 2 years in Europe while he was faculty at the University of Maryland overseas teaching program. Upon returning to the U.S., he continued at Tufts, then later worked for the National Transportation and Highway Safety Administration, in Cambridge, MA, and Washington, D.C., conducting human factors research. He was a calm, gentle, giving soul with high ethical standards, infinitely respectful and accepting of others. Despite his accomplishments and contributions, he always remained incredibly humble. He was a consummate learner and loved to read - languages, science, technology, culture, philosophy, politics - which he continued to do until his very last days. The only thing he loved more than acquiring and sharing knowledge was his family. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Josette, daughter Michelle (Julius Gylys), and beloved grandsons, Anthony and Matthew. A celebration of his life will be held later this summer. GARDINIER, Robert E., Sr., 89, of Kingston, N.Y., passed away, peacefully, at home on Monday, June 11, 2018. He was surrounded by people who loved him. A lifelong resident of the Hudson River Valley, he was raised in Millbrook and Kingston, N.Y., and eventually settled in Kingston, N.Y., with his wife of 64 years Marie Bradley Gardinier. Following World War II, he served in the submarine division of the US Navy in the Panama Canal Zone. He graduated college and worked briefly for the New York State Dept. of Finance in Albany, N.Y., and then spent the next 35 years as a manufacturing consultant with International Business Machines. He loved the outdoors and remained remarkably athletic into his early 80’s with biking, swimming, hiking, cross country skiing, and ice skating. He was devoted to the wellbeing of his wife, children, and grandchildren, emphasized education, generosity, and fairness and choose actions over words to demonstrate his love and beliefs. He forever retained a sense of youth and playfulness, and quietly sought self -improvement his entire life. The amount of quality one on one time he spent with each of his children and grandchildren created a unique legacy. He is survived by his wife, Marie Bradley Gardinier of Kingston, N.Y.; three children, Meg Gardinier Lawder and her Husband Thomas C. Lawder of Westchester County, N.Y., Robert E. Gardinier, Jr. of Beverly Hills and Laguna Beach, Calif., Elizabeth Gardinier Denham and her Husband Ross Denham of Cape May Courthouse, N.J.; five grandchildren, Meredith Lawder of Brooklyn, N.Y., Melanie Lawder of Milwaukee, Wis., Madeline Lawder of San Francisco, Calif., Carson Denham and Cameron Denham of Cape May Courthouse, N.J.; and many nieces and nephews throughout New York and New England, including Bonnie Miller of Miramar, Fla. He was predeceased by his Parents, George F. Gardinier, Sr., and Josephine Smith Gardinier, and one brother, George F. Gardinier, Jr. Entrusted to the care of A. Carr & Son Funeral Home, 65 Lucas Ave., Kingston, N.Y., 12401, where family and friends may visit on Thursday June 14, 2018 from 4 to 7 p.m. The procession will form at the funeral home on Friday, June 15, 2018, at 9:30 a.m. and proceed to Immanuel Lutheran Church, 22 Livingston St., Kingston, N.Y., 12401, where at 11 a.m. the funeral service will take place. CHALK Russell Ray, 70, a lifelong Sand Springs resident, passed away on Saturday, May 19, 2018 in Tulsa. One of two children of Percy Lamar Chalk and Emogene Mozell (Smoot) Chalk. Russell was born in Tulsa on September 27, 1947. A graduate of Charles Page High School in Sand Springs, Russell went on to serve his country in the United States Navy and completed two tours of duty as a submariner prior to his discharge in November of 1972. Following his Navy service Russell was an independent trucker. An outdoor person, he spent a lot of time at nearby Keystone Lake where he enjoyed camping, fishing and boating with his family. Surviving Russell are his children: Renesa Barbee of Sand Springs OK, Russell Wayne Henley of Mannford OK, Stacey Frantz and husband Randy of Old Forge Pa, Sandra Chalk of Olyphant PA, Shaun Wenzel and wife Leslie of Sand Springs OK, and Justin Wenzel and wife Bethany of Sand Springs OK; grandchildren Kimberly Nicole Stark, Victoria Leeds, Trystyn Batchelor, Colin Leggat, Cadee Calvey, Thorne Frantz and Maddisyn Wenzel; and one great-granddaughter Lilly Stark. Russell is also survived by his only sibling Linda Chalk Heim and husband Dr. Ronald Heim of Tulsa; their children Rhonda Dzurilla and husband Josef of Owasso OK, Robin Buthod and husband Bill of Tulsa OK, and Regina Carpenter and husband Joel of Stillwater OK; and their children Katie and Belle Dzurilla, Angela and Mary Clair Buthod, and Ronnie, Johnnie, and Gracie Carpenter. Russell also leaves behind many extended family members and long-time Navy friends. Funeral services for Russell were held Wednesday, May 23, 2018 with Rev. Joel Hutchison officiating. Military honors were performed at this service by the United States Navy Honors Team. Buried at Ft. Gibson National Cemetery, 1423 Cemetery Road, Ft. Gibson OK.
