Atlantic 07/19/58: The USS Piper (SS-409) runs aground on a sandbar off Province town, Massachusetts, but is pulled free after seven hours with minor damage.

7-20-1960 In first launch of Polaris missile, USS George Washington (SSBN 598) successfully fires 2 operational Polaris missiles while submerged off Florida.
