At random: Habitability is heavily stressed in the construction of modern submarines. Specially designed color schemes, mechanical conveniences, air conditioning, and the best chow in the Navy are supplied to make the vessels more livable. A full time staff is maintained by Electric Boat Division to work out 'human engineering' problems. |

Master and Commander Posts: 1576 Location: Wollongong, NSW | Subject: RE: Ralph - Batten Down the Hatches We have climate change - the climate is different every day to some degree. Here they talk about averages for the month or season. Apart from our seasons in the northern tropics, the only thing predictable is that the climate is unpredictable. Fortunately there have been few category Fives during summer seasons. Any blow can cause trouble and anyone living in coastal tropics has to accept that one will be there someday. We still build/expand cities on our coasts. We can be storm resistant (cyclones for us) but we will never be able to build 'cyclone proof' and have an acceptable, liveable building. I have not forgotten Cyclone Tracy of Christmas Day 1974. Did not go to provide power (Otway) at the time but early 1976 was there in my LCH to help take stuff in and out for the ongoing clean-up. It was years before Darwin was rebuilt. The larger the city, the worse the overall damage. In my LCH (Balikpapan), we were met by Tropical Storm Dawn, when south of Cairns; managed to re-secure the load and was then able to enter port whilst inside the eye of the storm. We don't build community bomb shelters but we may have to start considering tropical revolving storm shelters. I'm fortunate to live in temperate climate conditions but I take my hat off to people who can master 'extreme conditions.' | ||
