At random: Insignia of the Navy's submarine service is a submarine flanked by two dolphins. Dolphins, or porpoises, the traditional attendants to Poseidon, Greek God of the Sea and patron deity of sailors, are symbolic of a calm sea, and are sometimes called the 'sailors' friend. In addition to the Dolphins, those World War II submariners who participated in successful combat patrols may wear the coveted Submarine Combat Insignia.

ANDERSON, Thomas Irwin, 88, of Colorado Springs, passed away on Oct. 25, 2018 in Colorado Springs. Tom will be remembered as a respected civic leader, successful businessman, courageous adventurer and devout family man. Tom was born and raised in Rochester, N.Y., to William and Thesa Anderson on Oct. 19, 1930. After a year at Cornell University, he enlisted in the Navy and served on a submarine. He later moved to Houston, where he met Barbara Ann Bohn (Bobbie), his wife of 52 years. They married in 1952 and had four children. In 1963, the family moved to Broomfield, Colo., where Tom worked as a district manager for Volkswagen. In 1965, they relocated to Colorado Springs, where he worked for Phil Winslow Volkswagen for 16 years, most of those as vp and general manager. In 1982 Tom bought and rebuilt Shewmakers Camera Shop in downtown Colorado Springs. He retired in 1997, and Tom and Bobbie devoted themselves to travel and grandkids. Bobbie died in 2004. In 2007, Tom met and married Roxie Rheinschmidt, a longtime Colorado Springs resident. Together they enjoyed travel, golf, fly fishing, gardening, grandkids and merging their two families. Tom had the heart and courage of a true sailor. He owned two sailboats and travelled for many years with his family and alone throughout the Caribbean and from British Columbia to Mexico. He once said, "The real pleasure of those sailing years was being able to share such wonderful experiences and places with my family and friends." Tom was also a true philanthropist and civic leader. He cared deeply about local government and the quality of life in his community. He served as El Paso County Assessor and Colorado Springs City Council member, was active on the boards for the Chamber of Commerce, First United Methodist Church, the Humane Society and Winter Night Club and was a member of the C.S. Executive Association, Toastmasters, Pike Peak Roundtable and Colovest Syndicate. His dedication to education drove him to establish scholarship funds and to volunteer with El Pomar's College Readiness and Success Program. Tom is preceded in death by his wife Bobbie, son Mark, brother Hugh and sister Isabella. He is survived by his wife Roxie and her mother, Frances, his children and their spouses: Andy and Valerie Anderson, Robin and Bill Cramer, David Anderson and Karen Kovaly and Mark's widow, Peggy Anderson.
