LEVY, Jerome J., Sr., a former owner of a fleet of taxicabs in Baltimore City, trading as "Diamond Cab" died October 21, 2018 of natural causes at Lorien Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Riverside, Maryland. The longtime Baltimore City and Harford County resident was 96. Jerome Joseph Levy, Sr. was born in Baltimore on August 21, 1922 and raised on Whitelock Street near Druid Hill Avenue the son of Joseph Levy, a salesman and Caroline Shuster, a homemaker. A precocious child, he skipped the second grade while attending All Saints Catholic Elementary School in Baltimore. He was forced, in 1935 to leave school after completing the eighth grade in order to work to help support his family following the Great Depression, finding employment at the Lord Baltimore Hotel performing various jobs. In 1942 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was assigned to the submarine service following training at Great Lakes, Illinois and New London, Connecticut. Thereafter he was deployed to the South Pacific and saw Combat action in WW II. He qualified in USS S-37 in 1944, was a Plankowner in USS Chivo, and was TM2(SS) when Honorably discharged in 1945. He returned to Baltimore and in 1946 married the former Helen Catania. They initially lived on Milton Avenue in East Baltimore and in 1951 moved to Northwood where they raised five children. Following his discharge from naval service, Mr. Levy became a federal employee working for the U.S. Postal Service. Subsequently, he joined his two brothers-in-law and father-in-law in the taxicab business. He began as a cab driver and steadily rose to become a taxicab fleet owner in the Diamond Cab Association in Baltimore City. After some 35 years in the business he retired in 1987. He was a decades-long member of St. Mathew Roman Catholic Church in Northwood and was very active in the parish, volunteering for various lay activities in the church and as a member of the local Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed vacationing in Ocean City with his family, playing pinochle, and was an avid and very accomplished duckpin bowler having been a member of the St. Mathew and St. Joseph Fullerton bowling leagues for over 35 years. He greatly enjoyed sharing many, many pleasurable times with his family and working in his garden at his home in Harford County that he shared with his wonderful wife Helen, having moved there in 1982. He was an avid fan of the Orioles, Colts and Ravens and his favorite meal was steamed crabs and beer. His wife Hellen died in 2000. He was predeceased by two brothers, Edgar and Paul and a sister, Dorothy. He is survived by his 5 children Nancy (Frank) Forest Hill; Verna (Brent) Bel Air; Connie (Brian) Perry Hall; and Paul (Sylvia) of Copley, Ohio. Another son, Jerome J. Levy, Jr. (Phyllis) died in 2015. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Family was everything to him and he will be sadly missed by all who had the good fortune to have known him. Published in Baltimore Sun on Nov. 7, 2018


NORDHAUG, Eric Francis, 88, a longtime resident of River Edge passed on Friday, November 2, 2018. Born in Brooklyn, New York to Ina Lindbloom of Mariehamn, Aland. His father was Chris Nordhaug of Oslo, Norway. He married Lucille Melecio of the Bronx on April 17, 1954 and is the proud father of Paul Eric Nordhaug. Eric graduated from the New York High School of Printing. He served in the US Naval Reserve for twelve years and attained the rank of Quartermaster in the submarine division and was discharged in 1959. In 1955 Eric was accepted to the New York Police Academy and excelled in marksmanship winning the Mayors Trophy Cup. He was promoted to detective 3rd grade in 1957 and served in the 20th squad and the youth squads. He also attained the rank of Sergeant and was preparing to qualify for Lieutenant when he retired due to a medical condition. When Eric recovered from his illness he enrolled in John Jay College of Criminal Justice and earned his Bachelor of Science degree Cum Laude in 1978 and his Master of Public Administration in 1985. Eric enjoyed music and as a youth was an accomplished violinist and accordion player. At the family gatherings he would often play for the group. He loved nature and the outdoors and was an avid glider flight enthusiast receiving his glider pilot sporting license from the Soaring Society of America in 1972. In addition he was a certified scuba diver, firearms instructor and radiotelephone operator. Eric was always quick to ask about one's status and offer any help he could give. His smile and giving nature were his trademarks. He was most happy when surrounded by family and friends. Daddy you are missed now and forever. All are invited to visit Friday, 4-9pm at the Beaugard-McKnight Funeral Home, 869 Kinderkamack Rd., River Edge. Funeral Service Saturday 10:30 AM at the funeral home. Interment Kensico Cemetery, Valhalla, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name to The New York City Police and Fire and Widows Children Benefit Fund are appreciated.


THOMPSON, Norman David, 72, of Stanley, NC, formerly a lifelong resident of Middletown, passed away on September 5, 2018 at home surrounded by his loving family after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Skip was the son of the late Albert and Bertha (Roberts) Thompson and a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School Class of 1964. He is survived by his loving wife Ann and their son Greg of Middletown, three older brothers, Don of Middletown, Ted (Judy) and Jim of Arizona, sisters Pat Sutherland (Wes) of Maine and Annette Bradley (Tom) of Clinton and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters-in-law, Sheila of Middletown and Gayle of Arizona. Skip was a proud submariner in the US Navy and a Plank Owner on the USS Will Rogers, finishing his 10-year career on the USS Lewis and Clark. Skip was a Technical Manager for 25 years for AT&T DATEC and a life member of the B.P.O.E. Elks #771.
His many friends and family will remember him as the life of the party, singing, dancing and living life to its fullest. A celebration of life and interment will be held with full military honors Saturday, Nov. 10 at the CT State Veterans Cemetery, Bow Lane at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 188 North Haven, CT 06473.
