At random: The USS SKIPJACK was the first submarine designed from the keel up for top underwater performance using nuclear power. An earlier SKIPJACK was the first U.S. submarine to cross the Atlantic ocean under her own power (Newport, Rhode Island to Ponta Delgada, Azores, in 1917).

KIDD, Paul Lee, 83, of North Muskegon, passed away on Tuesday, November 6, 2018. He was born on August 22, 1935 to Noah and Octavia (Herbert) Kidd in Pikeville, KY. When Paul turned 18, he joined the US Navy Submarine Service and served from 1954-1976. During his Naval career, Paul served on seven boats, from the Arctic to Antarctica and the Cuban Missile Crisis. Following his retirement from the Navy Paul volunteered his time at the Smithsonian Institution. He retired again in 2004 and moved to North Muskegon with his wife, Barbara, where he was active in supporting the USS Silversides. He also was of member of Escolar Base of US Submarine Veterans, where he served as Commander for four years. Paul is survived by his wife of 29 years, Barbara; children, Linda Lawson, Paul Kidd Jr and Diana (John) Korte; step-children, Jocelyn Buckingham, Roxanne Filegar and Kathryn Buckingham-Fry; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; siblings, Janevieve Patton and Ted Kidd; and five half-siblings. He was preceded in death by his parents, five siblings, and five half-siblings. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date. FAUSTINO, Aquiles V., 75, of Groton, passed away on Monday, Nov. 5, 2018, at his residence. He was born in Leyte, Philipines, on May 12, 1943, the son of Amando and Esperanza Vallar Faustino. He married Bertha Panganiban, on May 6, 1967, in New London; she survives. Aquiles served 22 years in the Naval submarine service and after his retirement he worked as a mail sorter at the Post Offices in New London and Norwich. He is survived by his sons, Aquiles V. Faustino Jr. and Ambrose P. Faustino; and his daughters, Charito and Atlantya Faustino; his grandchildren, Margie, Lynda, Ambrose W. Jr., Aquiles G. III and Amanda. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, at the Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St. Interment with military honors will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery, New London. Visiting hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, a love donation may be made to the family to assist with arrangements. KELLY, Earl Joseph, 93, of Jacksonville, FL passed away November 2, 2018. He is survived by his sister Sally (John), his wife Eleanor of 73 years, his 3 sons Patrick (Aileen), Terry (Georgia), Michael (Anita), 6 grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Elizabeth and Earl Joseph Kelly and two brothers George & Tommy. Earl was born July 2, 1925 in Lonaconing, MD. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1942 and served on the submarines USS Sabalo (SS-302) and USS Sea Leopard (SS-483). He was an active member of J.A.G.A., serving as president & coordinating the J.A.G.A Mixed 2-Ball for 10 years. He was an active member of Arlington United Methodist Church for 60 years. A memorial service is scheduled for 11 am on Sat., Nov. 10 at Arlington United Methodist Church -1400 University Blvd. N., Jacksonville, FL 32211. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in his name to the church or the American Cancer Society. Published in the Florida Times-Union on Nov. 8, 2018
