When I attended sub school in '61 our chow hall was a small building up on the hill fairly close to our barracks. When I was up in Groton for a USSVI birthday bash a few years ago, some of us ate in large chow hall which I believe was on the lower base some where. Any of you guys stationed at Groton after sub school remember a chow hall for the rest of the base? Where was it???

In '64/'65 it was at the bottom of the stairs going up to the barracks.

I gave an misleading response on the other BBS. Close but no cigar. Ric has it in it's correct location. Only going there once clouded the memory bank.

The only Galley/Enlisted Dining Facility is, and was at the time I reported aboard 1 Jan 1970, at the intersection of Tautog and Thresher Aves. That is close to the fence along Rte 12 and to the east south east of Rock Lake. {Go past the boomer missiles, boomer training building and walk about 200 yards to the galley} This galley feeds all of Sub Base and tenant commands, which was a lot of people (3,000 to 4,000 enlisted) back when I was there.
I remember where the old galley was. It was behind the the administration building (across from Dealey Center). I had to go into it one time but cannot remember why. It wasn't being used and was slated to be razed. That was at the bottom of the stairway that went up past the old BESS building.

Now I know I am old. I can't remember where the chow hall was. I was there for Sub School, Emergency Submarine Welders School and Submarine Swimmers School. I think that is what SCUBA was called then. Now I do know where the Ace Ducey was, and those dangerous steps to get back to the barracks. Swimmers School in Key West was definitely the better location.

The Chow Hall was right at the foot of those steps!

Ric ~
There are several steps getting up/down the hills at Groton. The ones that went between the old school house and old galley were in the best condition being cement in construction. Others were sorta cut out of the hills and in various stages of safety concerns.

These were long concrete stairs that ran from the chow hall up to the school barracks and, at that time were used by almost everyone so had to have been in good shape. Don't really recall the other stairs but I must have used them.

The only time I was ever in or at New London was for Sub School in '62 and again in '63 for time on the marine railway. I doubt that I would recognize even a little bit of the base.

The last time I was there was July 1989. You would not believe the changes since then. Like the boomer training build is totally gone as well as the missiles. But, after spend 9 of my 20+ years there I think I can find my way around the base.
