Pretty much what I had suspected about storing your personal and private data in another place other than your computer. The "Cloud" now fully explained and confirmed by funny Aussie comedienne, Kitty Flanagan.

Well done - explained in layman's terms; being a buff, no doubt Ric will disagree. |

I have never trusted the cloud. I have thought it is/was a foolish idea from the beginning.
I keep all my stuff backed up on my own external hard drives. Away from the internet. |

Microsoft is/ has been building a "cloud" near my town of 500 population in rural Southside Virginia. Construction has been in progress for at least 6 or 7 years, still building. No telling how many acres it entails. All surrounded by high security fence.

I've always been skeptical about casting anything into an intangible realm. If it's out there, someone can get it.

Can't disagree with you. There may have been a time when memory was limited on a computer. then something like cloud might have made sense. My computer is just a little one with only 816 or so gig. I have over 400 gig free space. I don't keep too much anyway. Just genealogy (30-40 meg and a few thousand family pics.
I also post nothing from my tree on the web. Will answer requests for info but I will never post my total work on the net.

Everything in the cloud----NO. Scanned photos of family, vacations, holiday gatherings, policies and receipts etc.----sure. I'm guessing the thousands of those who lost their homes in California recently would appreciate being able to view or print memories or document possessions for their insurance companies. I make sure all the cloud sites I use for backup are secure and never put anything online that could put sensitive data at risk.

My Terabyte External Drive can fit in a shirt or jacket pocket. If I gotta leave it goes with me. |

So you take it with you on vacation and to the grocery store? Fires don't always happen when you are at home in front of the telly...
If it isn't sensitive, cloud storage makes good sense. |
