At random: Leonardo da Vinci, the Florentine Renaissance inventor and artist, developed plans for an underwater warship but kept them secret. He was afraid that it would make war even more frightful than it already was.

PILORZ, Bruno Harrison, died peacefully at his home in Santa Barbara on November 12, 2018. Bruno was born August 13, 1922 in Honolulu, then Territory of Hawaii, to Bruno Paul and Elizabeth Vivian Snyder Pilorz. He spent his boyhood in Mindanao and Hawaii before his family moved to California in 1937. He graduated from Piedmont High School in 1940, where he was President of his senior class. Bruno enrolled at Cal Tech where he lived in Ricketts Hall (and where, along with his two best friends, he originated a ceremony involving a brake drum which persists to this day). He lettered in Water Polo, Football, and Swimming, he was Vice President of his senior class, and he was Company Commander of his Naval V-12 unit. He graduated in 1944 with a BS in Chemistry. He was commissioned as an officer in the Submarine Service, USNR. He was assigned to the USS Entemedor (SS-340) as communications officer, but almost the first message he decoded on his first cruise was the V-J message: "Cease Hostilities". He was demobilized but then recalled during the Korean War, serving on the USS Catfish (SS-339). He was discharged as a Lieutenant, USNR, in 1952. In 1951, while visiting friends in Pasadena, he met Martha Baird Ingram. They were married in August 1951. In civilian life he worked for 40 years for as a chemical engineer and engineering manager for The Shell Chemical Company. His initial assignment was in Houston, followed by seven years in Ventura before a 1960 posting to the Head Office Engineering Group in New York and subsequently Houston. In 1972 he created Shell's Environmental Engineering Group, which he managed until his retirement in 1987. In retirement he and his wife Martha returned to Carpinteria and Santa Barbara. He amassed 3000 hours Reading for the Blind and Deaf, where his ability to read technical textbooks was highly valued. At Valle Verde, his retirement community, he was active as a parts reader in the drama production group. Through his life Bruno was an avid golfer - collecting 7 holes-in-one - and in retirement playing four or more rounds a week, always walking. He was known by friends and family for his penetrating and sometimes impish dry humor. Bruno is survived by his wife of 67 years, Martha Baird Ingram Pilorz, his sons Paul Ingram, Philip Baird, and Stuart Harrison, and his granddaughter, Alison Christine Pilorz. A memorial service will be held Monday, November 19 at 2pm at Valle Verde. Published in The Santa Barbara News-Press Online Edition Nov. 16, 2018.
