We were in Chicago, for two days, this summer and saw whites with piping. I thought they were some kind of private school naval cadets.

At the risk of going out on a limb here and really making someone mad, I must ask - why is it that someone tries to come up with something that looks, feel, wears better etc. than the old stuff? I know that "our" stuff was really Old Navy and really neat but why can't people just leave well enough alone? And, just so I don't get dumped i the bilge, hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving.

One would think by now that changes to a summer uniform would offer better skin cancer protection to the face and neck areas. Would not require much imagination.

My own two cents worth is these folks in DC with too much time on their hands need to be sent to sea and do "sailor stuff" not fashion design.

With all the frequent changes to the Navy uniforms in past few years it begs the question as to whether some of the top brass in Supply departments have stock in clothing contractors.

The uniform might look better if it fit. Sleeves are too long as are the trouser legs.

The piping looks silly. Maybe they added them and the split ass to make them different from our old whites. Also can't find anything nice to say about the way they just put on the dixie cup and yank down the sides a little. I suppose it's a uniform after all and all must look the same. I know. another old dinosaur writes and bitches.

I agree Doc. They look more like sacks than uniforms.
This "new" Navy gets more pathetic everyday.

On both sides of the pond, they regularly go on about reducing unnecessary military costs. Why not just leave well enough alone FFS?

I don't think it's a split ass, but splits up the two sides. Looks like it would be perfect to install zippers.
Did the old whites have the button cuffs like the Service Dress Blues? Or were they loose cuffs, like the undress blues?
Actually they don't look much different than the whites we had in the 60's, except for the piping and stars on the flap.
I didn't wear the white jumper as much as I wore the Tropical white shirt without the neckerchief.

The slit looked liked it was in the back. The side with zipper isn't so bad. Our 60s dress whites had loose cuffs. Reminds me that all our uniform designs were to allow quick removal in case of having to jump overboard. That's been lost over the years.

White uniforms circa WW I had blue collars with white piping and blue cuffs with white piping. These lasted about 10 or 15 years. Not really sure of the timing. Never researched it.
Here is a pic dated 1925 with the collars and cuffs

On the photo of the new uniform. Take a look at the hem at the bottom of the jumper - not the sleeves. If that hem is just 1-1/2" wide, then (figuring the scale) the slit would be almost 13 inches long, which would put it almost up to the line of the shoulder blades IF IT IS IN THE BACK. Now look closely at the top of the slit, It looks like there's a little white tab poking out toward the right. If that's a zipper tab, it now makes a lot of sense IF IT IS UNDER THE ARM.

Remember what they said in boot camp, if you wanted to get rid of the jumper quickly - as in water, just pull the two sides of the neck, and the jumper would rip right down the center to the belly. With the zipper, it would make shucking the jumper pretty easy, except for the buttons on the sleeves.

Maybe they DID put some thought into the new design. Maybe they DID listen to the sailors after all. Then again, maybe they didn't.

If the thing was lightweight cotton, wearing the top in the water would help prevent sun damage, reduce the heat loss and help reduce the demand for hydration. Talk to divers and to people who have spent time in the water to see what is needed. Clothes off for early rescue is fine but not for longer exposure.

The white uniform for the 1960's was all the weight material, the same cloth, for pants and jumper. It was cool enough and the simple addition of adding the neckerchief to turn it into a dress uniform was convenient. I understand there will be no "Tropical White" shirt to go with this. We mostly worn this in Hawaii during my time in. It was so much cooler than the jumper.
