I received this recently. I've emailed back for time in service and more info. If anyone has crew photos for Shad, let me know.

My father, Lester Hurst, served on the USS Shad and I would love to find some information about him. He passed away when I was 7 (He was 69 when I was born), so I don't remember very much about him. I would love to see some pictures of him if anyone has any. Please email me back with any information you may have.

Thank you,
Stacey Gilliland

Don:
Did/do the sub sailors put a cruise book together at end of a deployment?
If so, those books for USS SHad might have photo of the lady's dad.....
Post war practice naturally......WE'd get them done in Yokosuka color pics of ship etc...
plus we'd always add fun pics taken by crew members off duty....

Some followup info:

Don,

Thank you so much for your email. He would have been 18 years old in about 1930. He was a little older during World War 2. I know that some of the guys called him "Pappy". I am really not sure what years he was on the Shad, I just know that it was the one that he was on. I will be so appreciative of anything you can find.

Thanks again,
Stacey Gilliland

Here's a few sources that I have used in the past - AND - don't forget to order the WWII Submarine war patrol reports through Submarine Memorabilia  at:  http://www.usssealion.com/

BTW: The USS Shad SS-235 made 11 war patrols and these reports usually have a crew roster within each...

You might call the reference archivist in the Operational Branch of the National Archives at the old Washington Navy Yard. Ask them for "anything on your boat?" Their numbers are 1(202) 433-3170 or 3171. You can also purchase reels of 16mm microfilm that contained the Personnel Diaries, NAVPERS 0001 (Active) for the years 1960 through 1968 from BUPERS. This will give you the name, service number, rank/rate, date reported/transferred (except if reported prior to 1/60) You'll also need to get access to a 16mm micro film reader (your local library is usually a good source).

John...

This is great - thanks. I'll email you in the coming weeks for ideas as I'd like to build a central resource page that we can steer folks too for "this" or "that" - it would be great to have a single entry point for searching for just about anything - one place to maintain currency and all that... thanks again.
