At random: The first submarine which actually sank another enemy vessel under combat conditions was the CSS HUNLEY built during the Civil War. The Union frigate HOUSATONIC on blockade station off Charleston, S. C. was the victim. The incident occurred on February 17, 1864.
I'm told there are no dumb questions, but . . .

... what is the absolute highest rank in the Navy? And where does a Rear Admiral fit in the echelon?

You've never failed me yet.

What does LH & RH stand for? Left hand and right hand?

Well military rocket scientits made tow grades of Rear Admiral 0-7 lower grade and stripe solid(one star Admiral), then a year later qualify for 0-8 upper half more senior and next in line to Vice Admiral (two stars). (like a Lieutenant COL, & COL). and solid stripe with one small stripe on collar.

Similarto enlisted ranks Chief Petty Officer(CPO), Master Chief Petty Officer MCPO) and Senior Chief Petty Officer SCPO - each as different rate 07/08/09 each step up more money

Not sure how many of them are left handed or right handed

Hope that helps with the LH/UH question

E-1 - Seaman/Fireman/Airman/Constructionman Recruit
E-2 - Seaman ... Apprentice
E-3 - Seaman ...
E-4 - Petty Officer 3rd Class
E-5 - Petty Officer 2nd Class
E-6 - Petty Officer 1st Class
E-7 - Chief Petty Officer
E-8 - Senior Chief Petty Officer
E-9 - Master Chief Petty Officer

O-1 - Ensign (Army 2nd Lieutenant)
O-2 - Lieutenant Junior Grade (Army Lieutenant)
O-3 - Lieutenant (Army Captain)
O-4 - Lieutenant Commander (Army Major)
O-5 - Commander (Army Lieutenant Colonal)
O-6 - Captain (Army "BIRD" Colonal)
Flag ranks: (incl number of stars)
O-7 - Rear Admiral Lower Half - used to be Commodore (Army Brigadier General) *
O-8 - Rear Admiral Upper Half (Army General) **
O-9 - Vice Admiral (Army Lieutenant General) ***
O-10 - Admiral (Army Major General) ****
O-11 - Fleet Admiral (Army General of the Army) Both wartime by act of congress *****

Chester W. Nimitz, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Douglas A. McArthur, George C. Marshall and very few others attained the 5-star rank. Can't remember if Halsey became a 5-star.

I probably got the army flag ranks wrong.

Swap the Army O-8 and O-10:

O-8 - Rear Admiral Upper Half (Army Major General) **
O-9 - Vice Admiral (Army Lieutenant General) ***
O-10 - Admiral (Army General) ****

Yeah, you'd think Lt.Gen would be Junior to MGen, but not in our US Army/Air Force/Marine Corps
