Anyone heard from Scrivener, our resident legal counsel and Northern resident since the earthquake?

I will get in touch with George, I think and hope he's a long way from the disaster?

Gentlemen, all is fine here. We had some minor breakage that had to be cleaned up, but no structural damage. It was quite an experience, though. I awoke to violent shocks and the sound of things falling and shattering, and it seemed like it went on forever. It was disorienting, to say the least. There I was, safely ensconced in my bed, and all of a sudden the world seemed to be tearing itself apart. The electricity was the first casualty, so my wife and I needed to grope around for our head lamps, which were hung on a bedpost. Once we had light, we raced down to my twin granddaughter's day care to pick them up. We figured that even if they were OK they would be out of their minds with fear. As it turned out they weren't there. It seems that my daughter had the morning off, and so they were with her. We didn't know that, as my daughter's cell service was out. So, thinking that she might be off shopping when the quake happened, we went to my older granddaughters' school, only to see my daughter outside. That still left they grandsons, who were in high school. They had been evacuated, but we found them waiting outside the school with a whole bunch of other students. Finally, we had everyone, and everyone was OK.

This is the worst earthquake I have ever experienced. It was only a 7.0 strength, and I have been though stronger quakes. In the late 80's I had occasion to travel out to Adak Navy Base to conduct a series of hearings. While in one of the hearings at the base law library, the books suddenly flew off the shelves and flew across the room. The Shore Patrol arrived shortly and ordered everyone to flee to high ground. It seemed a sunami (sp?) was expected. The litigants fled right away, but not me. I had no vehicle. And, no one offered a ride! Five minutes before, I was "Your Honor" and then, when the rubber met the road, I couldn't catch a ride. But, fortunately, no tidal wave came. The point of this story is that the Adak quake was hundreds of miles away and very deep. Friday's quake was only a few miles away and was relatively shallow. As a result, it felt much stronger than the earlier, Adak quake.

One thing that I had reinforced is that the survival of loved ones is the primary concern. Material possessions are of nothing compared to that.

Thanks for inquiring, Walt.

George,
The grandsons are in high school - most importantly will they still ask to listen to your sea stories?

On a separate note, you could of responded to me without the derogatory comment about my ability on the planes.  After all, I had you for a mentor!

ref: USGS quake website.
They started on 30 Nov ,. ... all times UTC Most were at a depth of 44 Km, or 26 miles.
7.0 1729 UTC 12 KM N Anchorage
4.8 1733 16 KM N Anchorage
5.7 1735 4 Km N Anchorage
4.0 1739 13 Km SSW Big Lake
3.6 1741 12 Km S Big lake
3.9 1742:20 8 Km SSW Big Lake
4.5 1742:50 2 Km SE Big Lake
3.6 1748
3.3 1749
3.4 1751
3.7 1755:06
3.7 1755:48
3.4 1757
5.2 1800

4.9 1926

5.1 2026 55

The rest were mostly under 3.5 and diminishing in magnitude.

So where it felt like one long earthquake, it was many overlapping, mostly in the Anchorage and Big Lake area.

Been though a few 6.5 and smaller in my time. Small ones happen every day around here, mostly unfelt. Same thing in Alaska.

I remember the big quake we had in 1949. Mom pulled me into e doorway with her.
2000 or 2001 (can't remember which) I ran outside and was watching the ground roll in waves under me. I thought for sure I was going to see my house fall apart in front of me. That was 6.8.
We have small ones all the time here, too.
