At random: John Philip Holland built several submarines before the USS Holland, which became the first undersea craft commissioned by the U.S. Navy. The Holland was purchased on April 11, 1900 for a price of $150,000. It was commissioned into the US Navy on October 12, 1900.

The SSGN's are the perfect tool for a number of missions, counterinsurgencies included. The whole point of equipping a former boomer with the Tomahawk ripple fire capability was to give a theater commander the ability to use SEALs,
and the missile batteries, i.e., the MAC (Multi all round up cacnnster) ) think of a revolver cylinder standing upright loaded with seven Tomahawk ER missiles X 22.....154 total...as a silent way to deploy lots of firepower & the means of collecting intel on the ground before clearing out rats nests , i.e. terrorists, bases of Iranian Revolutionary Guards
and a whole raft full of other baddies quickly, accurately and with enough residual fire power on hand to make sure the job gets done.....one sub.....one crew. The SSGN's would also be a threat against a major 21st century enemy, China and Russia being prime names on the list......short of a non-nucler exchange, the SSGNs would be extremely valuable as stealth "undersea bombers," working in conjunction with a USAF air bourne attack against major military targets or hidden bases like the PLAN's sub base at Hainan....and her "String of Pearls" outlying bases which are specifically meant to blunt any US major surface force, i.e. USN Carrier Strike Groups, from closing Chinese terrority. A good example would be SSGN's patiently waiting on the eastern side of Taiwan should there be a "blow up" between the mainland and the little island with 24mm free Chinese.....and the PLA/PLAN military.
Frankly, the newspaper piece could have been better.

How do you boomer guys think this 15 month deployment is gonna be broken up. Unless these guys are growing and raising their own steaks and corn, it'll probably go 6 months out, relieve the watch for another 6 months and then the 3 month yard period.

What'cha think?

I believe I recently read "somewhere" that the patrols will last approximately 90 days with a short time in port to reprovision...Stationing one boat @ Guam would help the turn around time and time on station.......in the Pacific.
But the SSBN guys would know better......at some point, after a few of these deployments the crews switch.....and the sub has a longer time for yard availability, etc......When all four SSGNs are deployed there'll be an average of more than 2.5 boats on patrol at any given time......In theory, all four boats will have been completely refurbished and are in top condition at the start of the SSGN program.....The possible additon of 60+ SOF personnel will really cut down on the available chow....kinda like having all your college age kids coming back and living at home......

The "Normal Cycle" goes like this:

- 73 Days u/w, then pull in for a VR (Voyage Repair).
- The "other crew" takes the boat, and both crews do a 21 Day upkeep. Off-going crew comes home.
- Repeat three times. Then, the last u/w, the ship sails home...
- The ship returns for homeport (having been gone for nearly 1 year) for a 100 day Major Maintenance Period.

The Ohio's first deployment is an additional 3 months in length...

Curt....you're right on about actual deployment 73 day cycles........Since I sorta guessed at 90 day deployment,
I went back to Winter 2006 issue of Underwater Warfare....SSGN written by USN Program Officer for the right story.
The SSGNs can/will operate as a vital of a combined strike force, they have the ability to do quick COTS inserts for
special missions, have the CSRM and other very special communications capabilities. Really should read the article if you want the full story.....There's a lot of info.....
BTW......................
We really need another long range mini-sub to replace the ASDS for SEAL insertions away from "mother ship," hard to hide an Ohio SSGN in littorals.
