At random: George Washington Endorsed the use of the first American submarine, David Bushnell's TURTLE, during the Revolution. Following the vessel's attack on a British man-of-war, he discussed the potential use of submarines in a letter to Thomas Jefferson.

The subject tells it all. Sorry to see it go but he's right. Very few posts, I'm as guilty as anyone, and membership dropped considerably.

I haven't posted there for years but I'm sorry to see its demise. The people have probably gone where most of the folks who use to post here have gone. Sad.
Rest in peace Ron's BBS!!!

Hate to see it fold also.
The new, young nuke boat sailors don't have the same adhesion as us older folks. You can see it also at USSVI meetings. It is also happening here. The variety of posters isn't what it was because Shipmates are departing on Eternal Patrol and no new "blood" comes in to fill the slots.
IMHO the entire Navy sure ain't what it use to be. I'm glad I served when I did and I imagine that todays Navy is glad too.

I was a moderator there for years, and suddenly it changed servers. A new moderator said I was a racist so I never posted again. Bill Patterson had died, and that was it. Call me Simon Legree....

I agree, Ralph … I'm very happy that I was in before the pussification. I'm also certain the Navy is pleased because I am too much of a rebel to have fit the current mold (whatever the hell that is).
Back in the day I was a good Sub Sailor. I wouldn't be today.

I don't see a reason to shut it down just the same.  There are only a handful of folks that do the majority of the posts here - but I still think it is worth it.

I don't care much for Facebook but I do go on to check on the kids/grandkids and I do enjoy the private group there for my old boat.

Change is inevitable - who says the "new stuff" can't be just as good when we look back on it in ten or twenty (assuming a few of us will last that long LOL).

I agree with you Don. I hope you realize I wasn't looking for a shutdown.
Yes, change is good as long as it's for the better. What I meant, in my previous post, was that the new submarine force, for the most part, just isn't interested in the old submarine force. The DB sailors are a dying breed. They don't crank out any more of us and the crew dedication just doesn't show in the nukes.

My cousin's page may not actually shutdown and may just come under new leadership.  If you are interested in seeing it stick around, go to Ron's page and vote for a number of available options.  If you log in you can use the voting buttons, but you can also just post you preference in a post.

I haven't posted there since the day he had another hair across his butt about something he didn't agree with and told us he didn't care if we all left the BB (except for Jim C) … so I did.

I'm witchu Ralph,I haven't been an active poster here or there in a while but I stop in every day to see what y'all are up to.
As i tell folks "My "notorious" submarine career is often misquoted and ,most of the time, greatly exaggerated" but I like hanging out with you old pharts.

I went over the, voted for the #1 option, and read the remarks. It appears our old friend Mikey is the only one who will be glad to see it go.

Ralph - I was just referring to change in platform for communication.  The Navy of today is a different story.  Like most here, I'm glad I served in a time where a hard-working sailor could hit the beach and have a little fun !!

How is what I said about the poll gods equate to your belief that I will be glad to see that board shut down?

Dan, I'd like to see it stay going for the sake of variety and in appreciation of its long endurance.  Ron seems to always have had someone else do the heavy lifting anyway so I can't see that it is a burden of any significance.  The cost of running one is minimal.  Keep it and continue to let someone run it for him I say.

If he doesn't want that then hand it off to someone else and change the name.  I'd propose "The Myron Howard Memorial Submarine BBS" given all the work Myron did for so long and with so little recognition.  Just sayin'...

That's one of the options I voted for Don. But the Myron Howard Memorial BBS is genius.

Been hanging there a LONG time, back when Hot Rod & Martini were the only pages I could find.

Sorry to see it go, but I'm guilty for not spending more time there.

I know. At first all I could find was Hot Rod and CAUSS. I posted some on Hot Rods page but ended up joining CAUSS. Later I found the Rontini page. Hot Rod is gone, CAUSS is gone, now it looks like this one may be going too.

I was a CAUSS member as well.

Bob Merrigan, or was it Jim Merrigan had been USSVI National Commander.

Don Merrigan. When Don closed down his "Subnet.com" I finally convinced him to let me have his files and photos and html.
I've been slowly working on it but it is a huge job. One of the things I wanted to do was revise the DANFS text that went with it so it was actually readable and have full dates for movements and war patrols.

Don ran a small printing company called Marblehead Press. Not sure what else he published but he did print both copies of Jim Chrisley's "United States Submarine Force Infornation Book-1995" and the vastly expanded version II of the book in 2000. Both which I have used to death. Both copies finally began fallin apart. I had to finally take them apart and put the pages in page sleeves and then in binders. Some times doing research I use them a dozen or two times a day.
If Don is still with us he would be well into his 80's. He shut everything down after trying to move his mother to his home in Marblehead from the mid-west. She passed away sitting beside him in the car about two days into the move. This seemed to affect him greatly. He began shutting his board and other sites down after that.
