I found one of my favourite movies on Youtube called "The Outsider". It is the story of Ira Hamilton Hayes, a Pima Indian, who served in the US Marine Corps. Ira was one of six Marines who raised the US flag on Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima during WWII. A photo of this was taken and it came out as a statue image which was used to sell war bonds. The six marines were called home to promote the bonds drive but only three survived to do so.
Tony Curtis (with a prosthetic nose) played the part of Ira. It is a black and white movie, but I thought it was probably the best serious role Curtis ever played in his career. Besides that link, there is also one for Johnny Cash singing " The Ballad of Ira Hayes." Kind of a sad but moving story overall.

Agree. Great song and I love it. Leave it to John Cash ro sing some goodies.
Carol and I were walking along the waterfront a few years back when we spotted John and wife June sitting at a picnic table on the lawn of a motel. I knew he was doing a show at a local theater that evening but was surprise to see him. I kinda eased up to him and he proceeded to make me welcome and started shooting the breeze. We were soon to meet June's sisters, Helen and Anita. Extremely friendly and a real nice guy. That night at the theater, he and June did 90 minutes and then had an intermission. Then came back with Anita an Helen and did another 90 minutes. Really a great show.
When you mentioned Ira Hayes I thought of another Cash song "Reuben James". That is about the tincan that got sunk escorting a convoy to the UK.
With the passing of Geo. HW Bush, kinda remembered he got shot down and was rescued by a US submarine. Did a bit of reading and found it was USS Finback . Also that Bush was shot down another time and rescued by a US destroyer. He did 58 combat missions and received several awards. Thanks to our biased, Commie media, I never heard a word of any of this when he was president. Quite a hero. |

just finished watching the movie.
I agree, probably one of Curtis's best dramatic films.
Good depiction of a combat PTSD individual. Too bad they didn't know about that then.
I would have to read Hayes full bio to see how accurate the film was to the facts.
Thanks Pedro

OK, read the bio. Movie was pretty true to the facts though the song isn't.
