At random: A submarine, the TURTLE, was employed by the American revolutionary army to attack the British. It was built by David Bushnell at Saybrook, Connecticut, just a few miles from the present site of Electric Boat Division of the General Dynamics Corporation, and the U.S. Naval Submarine Base.

STAWICKI, John E., 74, of Wilmington, Delaware, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 9, 2019. Jack was born on August 11, 1944 in Wilmington, Delaware to the late Stanley and Edna Stawicki of Chesapeake City, Maryland. He is survived by his sons Matthew (Cathy) and Sean (Leah), three grandchildren, Kevin Wilkins, Blakely and Brexton Stawicki. He is also survived by his brother Stanley Stawickey and his wife Mary, of Fort Myers, Florida and his sister Joyce McHenry and her husband Calvin of Leesburg, Florida. Jack is also survived by his honorary son, Jeff Douglas (Vicki). After graduating from Bohemia Manor High School, Jack served in the United States Navy Submarine Force. Jack then began his career as a police officer for the Wilmington Police Department and later retired from the DuPont Experimental Station. Jack was a member of the Mid-Atlantic Subvet's Base and was inducted into the Holland Club Subvets Organization. Jack was an experienced and avid sailor and, in his retirement, loved sailing the waters off the Eastern Shore, the Caribbean and Florida's Gulf Coast. Jack was a free-spirited man, who loved driving his vintage Corvette and listening to Jimmy Buffet. He was truly "Changes in Latitude, Changes in Attitudes" kind of spirit and will be dearly missed by all. Funeral services will be private. BELL, Lemuel J., Sr., 78, of Delmont, passed away peacefully Monday, Jan. 7, 2019, in Excela Health Westmoreland Hospital, Greensburg. He was born March 14, 1940, in Chicago, a son of the late Lemuel B. and Ruth (Moore) Bell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Jason M. Bell; and sister, Anna Mae. Lem was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. Prior to retiring, he was employed as a nuclear training engineer by Westinghouse. He was a retired Navy senior chief petty officer, submarine service. Lem was a longtime member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Export, where he served as a lecturer. He was also a member of Knights of Columbus, Manordale, Faith in Action, Meals on Wheels and Slickville American Legion Post 18. He will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 54 years, Arlene (Cassidy) Bell; three sons, Lemuel J. Bell Jr. (Julie), Jeffrey A. Bell and Aaron Bell (Shelley); brothers, Harold Bell (Linda) and Millard Bell (Martha); sister, Tina Brodrick (Patrick); and a number of nieces and nephews. Lem was the proud grandfather of Lori (Felipe), Gregory and Riley, all of whom will especially miss him. Family and friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Vaia Funeral Home Inc., 463 Athena Drive, Delmont, 724-468-1177. A funeral Mass for Lem will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday in St. Mary's Catholic Church, 5900 Kennedy Ave., Export, with Father Efren Ambre as celebrant. Interment with full military honors accorded by VFW Post 33 Honor Guard, Greensburg, will follow in Twin Valley Memorial Park, Delmont. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Lem's memory may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
