POLEN, Melvin Patterson, HMC(SS) USN, Ret., passed away peacefully on January 4, 2019, at the Clyde W. Cosper Texas State Veterans Home in Bonham, Texas at the age of 88. Melvin was born on July 18, 1930, in Cambridge, Ohio, the son of Mary Irene Patterson and Lloyd Lewis Polen. He enlisted in the US Navy after high school and served for 20 years, training as a Hospital Corpsman and qualifying in submarines [USS Tusk (SS-426)]. His distinguished service awards included a Korean Service Medal, Korean Presidential Unit Citation, National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Navy Occupation Service Medal, and several Good Conduct Medals. Following his military retirement, Melvin and his family moved to EL Paso, Texas, where Melvin worked for several automobile dealerships before returning to school to study accounting. He subsequently ran a thriving bookkeeping practice serving small businesses in the El Paso area. Melvin relocated to the Dallas/Ft. Worth area in the late 1970s, where he embarked upon a long and successful career in insurance sales. Melvin was a member of the Masonic Lodge for over 50 years and also was active in the Elk’s Lodge. He devoted much of his free time to these institutions, as well as to the U.S. Submarine Veterans, Inc. Dallas base. Melvin enjoyed traveling, sports, music, and dancing. He was also a history buff and particularly enjoyed visiting our nation’s capital. Melvin was known for his great sense of humor and always enjoyed making people laugh. He adored children and was also known for taking in many a stray pet. Melvin is survived by his daughters Danielle M. Polen, of Washington, D.C., Lisa M. Davidson, of Midway, Utah, Karen Hunsicker and Keely Scamperle, both of the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, his son Mark Polen, also of the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, and several grandchildren. Deceased, in addition to his parents, are a son, Jeffrey Polen, and two brothers, Lloyd and Arthur Polen. His marriages ended in divorce. Melvin’s family is extremely grateful to the entire team at the Clyde W. Cosper Texas State Veterans Home for their outstanding care, compassion, and professionalism—especially to the staff of the “D Wing.” A celebration of Melvin’s life will be held at Grove Hill Funeral Home, with visitation from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday, January 7, 2019, and a Memorial Service on Tuesday, January 8, 2019, at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Grove Hill Memorial Park. www.grove-hill.com, 3920 Samuell Blvd, Dallas, TX, 75228


PETTERSON, Wendell Keith, 100, passed away peacefully on June 1, 2018, surrounded by his loving family. He was born October 17, 1917, to William N. and Bessie Severn Petterson. He was the youngest of four boys. He grew up in the Ogden area working on the family farm with his father, uncles and brothers: William N. Petterson Jr., Harlan D. Petterson and Parke S. Petterson; who have preceded him in death. He graduated from Utah State University in 1940, with a major in animal husbandry and a minor in agronomy. He was working on his Master's degree at Utah State when the war effort called him to active duty. He was a proud Navy veteran. He served in the U.S. Navy Submarine Service in the North Atlantic and the South Pacific during World War II where he progressed from enlisted man to Engineering Officer. He qualified in submarines (officer) in USS Kraken (SS-370) in 1945 and was LTJG when he left the Navy. He loved his country and always flew his flag. He married his sweetheart, Joanne Smith on August 24, 1950, in Ogden, Utah, at the First Baptist Church where he was a longstanding member. She died on June 11, 2006. In 1939, he began his career in farming and cattle ranching after purchasing his farm. While running his farm he worked for the Soil Conservation Service in Weber, Box Elder, Summit and Morgan counties from 1948 until his retirement in 1986. He also worked at the Weber Livestock Auction from 1986 until 2000. His farm and cattle ranch are still in operation in West Weber. He loved his farm, his heritage and the history of Weber County. He had an incredible memory and could tell you about all the historical facts involving the county and his farm. You always saw him working outside with his animals and on his tractor. Our Papa exemplified hard work and honesty. He was a wonderful role model and mentor to family and friends. He is survived by his three children and their spouses: Charlotte (Randy) Quinn, Ogden; Doug (Becky) Petterson, Fuquay-Varina, N.C.; Lewis (Lori) Petterson, West Weber. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and one great-grandson. and Canyon Home Care and Hospice, for your compassionate care. Wendell donated his body to the University of Utah body donor program so that others may benefit by him through research and education


ECHOLS, Donald Harrison, 96, of Howards Grove, died on Friday, January 11, 2019 at Rocky Knoll Health Care Center. He was born in East Liverpool, Ohio on January 17, 1922, the son of the late Albert and Eva Smith Echols. On January 17, 1945 he was united in marriage to Ann E. Heck in Chicago. She preceded him in death in October of 2009. He was an US Navy Veteran and served his country during World War II in the submarine fleet [USS Barbero]. Donald was a steamship officer for the American Steamship Company, retiring in 1982. Donald was a member of the local Sheboygan Audubon Society and he enjoyed gardening, reading, traveling and camping. Survivors include his daughter, Suzanne (Leland) Watson, of Howards Grove; three grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Donald was preceded in death by his parents, wife and his brothers and sisters. In accordance to Donald's wishes no services will be held. Donald's family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the entire staff at Rocky Knoll Health Care Center for the compassion and care that was given to him.
