At random: A church in Kyoto, Japan calls its congregation to worship with a bell from a submarine. The bell, from the submarine USS RAY was purchased for the church, and was transported to Yokosuka, Japan by another submarine, the USS RONQUIL.

Subject: Tuesday Obit

KEY, Charles Thomas, 76, of Sarasota, FL passed away January 17, 2019. He was born September 7, 1942 in Miami, FL to James and Amy (Colgrove) Key, who precede him in death. Charles served 20 years as a US Naval Officer in the Submarine Force and retired in 1985. 17 years of his civilian life were spent as a Captain and Program Manager of deep-water research vessels in support of the Navy's Sound Silencing Program. Charles received his education from Georgia Tech and University of Texas and later attended US Naval Postgraduate School, where he received both a Bachelors and Masters in Electrical Engineering. He also held a US Coast Guard License as Master 1600 tons on the ocean. Charles thoroughly enjoyed his years with the Submarine Veterans and the various positions he held. He found their friendship and comradery invaluable, as well as Mote Marine, especially his work with the Chicago Zoological Society's, Sarasota Dolphin Research Program and the Aquarists. Charlie lived a life defined by integrity, honor, courage and respect. He is so deeply loved, and his loss is immeasurable. Charlie is survived by his wife of 47 years, Sally (Koch) Key; his brothers, James (Joy) Key Jr. and Robert (Helen) Key; and his nephews, Andrew (Ana) Key and Charles Key. A Visitation will be held Saturday, January 26, 2019 from 2pm to 3pm and a Service from 3pm to 4pm at Robert Toale and Sons Funeral Home at Palms Memorial Park; 170 Honore Ave., Sarasota, FL 34232. Interment will take place on Monday, January 28, 2019 at 12:30pm at Sarasota National Cemetery; 9810 State Rd 72, Sarasota, FL 34241. Published in Herald Tribune Jan. 22, 2019
