LEVERING, Dewey Robert, 96, died peacefully on Sunday, January 20, 2019. Born November 16, 1922, he is survived by his daughter Barbara; son Robert John "Bob"; daughter-in-law Mary; and grandson, Jonathan. He was preceded in death by the love of his life, his wife of 60 years, Virginia Lee Brantner. A WWII submarine officer (1942-45) and graduate of Grinnell College, he earned a PhD in organic chemistry and worked his whole career at the Hercules Powder Co. and affiliates in the fields of high explosives, solid rocket propellants, fragrances, flavors, and yes, plastics, rising to the top executive level. He was a Life Master Bridge player and in his spare time he loved to play duplicate bridge, golf, and games with his family. He also enjoyed refinishing antiques, gardening, reading, and listening to live jazz. He was a loving husband and father. He was thoughtful, purposeful, and a consummate gentleman. He will be sorely missed. Donations in his name can be made to the Salvation Army in lieu of flowers. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, January 31, at the Chevy Chase United Methodist Church at 6 p.m. Published in The Washington Post on Jan. 30, 2019
