Today's update is the USS Tarantula (B-3) parading on the Hudson River in 1909 during the Hudson-Fulton Celebration that took place September 25 to October 9, 1909. It was to celebrate the 300th anniversary of Henry Hudson's discovery of the Hudson River and the 100th anniversary of Robert Fulton's first successful commercial application of the paddle steamer.

Wow, there was a boat named Tarantula? Us young guys who had to be reminded of all the boats that were not named for fish until later on could think this is a joke. But, Ric never jokes
with this stuff. Put that in the "you don't hear this every day file." Nice pic of a sea going spider.

Submarine SS-1 through SS 35 all had "names" at some point before the change to Letter/Number happened in Nov. 1912.

http://www.hazegray.org/danfs/submar/ (the list has not been refreshed since the 687 boat with newer names.)

With the advent of the "V" class names were soon brought back and the "V" classification was dropped by early 1930's. The older boats with Letter/Number "names" retained them to decommissioning. (O, R and S boats)
