We were the very first built from scratch SUBSAFE submarine as the result of the sinking.https://www.seacoastonline.com/news/20180403/uss-thresher-disaster-still-matters I just checked my copy of US Navy Lineup by Class, and Flasher was way down the line of previously built Thresher Class boats. Until you mentioned it, and I checked I didn't realize how many Thresher/Permit class boats were already in commission...

Master and Commander Posts: 1454 | Subject: RE: Thresher report I do believe SUBSAFE applied to the 598 class FBMs. Could be wrong about the whole class but pretty sure it involved my 2 boats; 599 and 600. There were some changes made during their first overhauls and refuelings.

She spent many years tied to the pier in Hawaii and got the reputation of that being because a) she wasn't subsafe or b) she was Fluckey's baby after the WW II Barb. I know when I was on her she was like the Tang class. There were parts stamped 593, 594 and 595 every so often just like 563, 564 and 565. I believe that to be in part of the mil-con contracts process. But the one thing for sure is that she sailed with a crack in her pressure hull pretty much 20 years because they could never get a good weld. Plankowner Posts: 9164 Location: Upper lefthand corner of the map. | Subject: RE: Thresher report Thresher went down on April 10, 1963. Flasher was on the ways. She launched June 22 1963 and was tied up and all drawings were reworked. She was towed to Rhode Island and 13' 9" was added at the aft end of her Ops Compartment. She was towed back to EB and construction was started anew. Boats in service were retro fitted with new SUBSAFE design and EB was teaming with them. Boats on the ways were redesigned with it added but Flasher was the first built with it. We did lots of Blow testing. Wild rides for sure. In fact a lot that was to go into the Sturgeons was first put in Flasher though we never had an O2 plant BUT we had all the piping to have one. Pain in the butt when rigging for dive to line something up that wasn't there. Washington was at EB for over haul and so was Henry when I got there. Took a walk through both while they were torn up. Didn't really know what I was looking at because of the mess.

Master and Commander Posts: 1454 | Subject: RE: Thresher report I kept my area in the Missile Comp't clean. Yes, standing fire watch during the 599 and 600 overhaul was a bit dirty. Those asbestos sparks jumped right off the lit end of a cigarette.

Washington while at EB I may have seen , you or anyone else. There were thousands of guys there it seems. We kept mostly to the North yard. In fact I don't think the whole time there I ever went into the South yard. I mostly knew the guys who shared the APL barges as offices close to us. We shared a barge with the Geo Bancroft and the Polk and Will Rogers were next door. We all wore the yellow hardhats and foul weather jackets. Pretty much so we didn't look like yardbirds. LOL

Master and Commander Posts: 1454 | Subject: RE: Thresher report I think I hid out on the barge curing a long tired weekend. One thing sticks in my memory was someone asking me if I was part of the Bancroft crew. They were getting ready to filed day the quarters. Sometimes the mind plays tricks but I don't believe this time.
