A seaman duce with a medal? I put in 5 years, all at sea, no stinking medals, not even good conduct, although I had no bad time or captain's masts).

I joined up in June 1964 and we were all issued a the NSDM, better known as the "gedunk medal". All I ever had while in active duty. Once I was in the Reserves one day a MUC showed in the mail.
Years later I got to thinking about how the Reserve Unit made me sew a hashmark on since I had 5 days over 4 years of active. (Admin hold during discharge). So I asked the Navy if that hashmark warranted a Good Conduct. Several months later one showed up in the mail.
I later discovered I was eligible for the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for something we had done when I was aboard. Same with the Korean Service Defense Medal since we sat off Wonson after Pueblo was taken.
I had nothing to do with it. I went to sea and came back and they gave me stuff.

Want to talk BS awards. In February 1978 Barb launches the first Tomahawk. I was the leading TM. Shortly after we deploy to WestPac. On the way home the CO convenes an awards board with all the leading POs and select department heads. He spouts stuff like "We can award 2 of these and three of those, etc..." So I pipe in with my recommendation that the weapons department be awarded the Navy Achievement medals for all of our Tomahawk work. The bull keeps being passed and all of a sudden it's down to the NAM vs. NCM. Myself and the ships's yoeman were on the ballot. We were asked to leave the wardroom so a vote could be taken. To this day me and the Yo laugh that it was a personality contest. He got the NCM and I got the NAM. Then to beat the band, did it have anything to do with Tomahawk. NO!!! I was given the NAM "for my expertise in instructing junior officers in the approach and landing during entering and exiting harbors in which Barb was to berth." Talk about BS.

When I was in 1051-1965, 3 years were required to qualify for the NGCM so I rate the medal with 2 bronze stars.

b. Eligibility Requirements

(1) Period of Service. In accordance with NAVADMIN 305/95,
subsequent to 1 January 1996, any three years of continuous active or Reserve
service as an enlisted person in the Navy or Navy Reserve. For the period 1
November 1963 through 31 December 1995, inclusive, the qualifying eligibility
period is four years.

This means in 1996, the eligibility requirement for the award was reduced from four years of service to three.

Sure you did.

You went to sea and did your job.

You earned any unit award just like everyone else.
