I know I’mwriting this for a crowd of guys that’ll understand what I’m gonna say, aboutbeing old.

The otherday I went to my GP for my yearly feel good exam. After the usual long wait, oneof the nurses calls me in for my pre-exam, exam. You know BP, temperature, weight, height. She tells me what my BP is along with my weight and height.

Inmy lifetime, I have achieved the lofty height of, 5’6” which I have been forthe past 60 years. But now she says I’m a miniscule 5’ 4 ½”. Ironically, whilemy height is going down my weight is going up. What the hell is with that.

I try toargue with her that if the Navy said I’m 5’6”, I’m 5’6”. She then asks how longago was that, to which I blithely reply, Oh about 58 years ago. To which shehad the audacity to say, “I rest my case”.

So, mumblingto myself I follow her into the exam room, wondering how the hell could all ofthose damn vertebrae collapse onto themselves and me still being able to standand walk and do all the things I usta be able to do…well almost able to do andnot flop around like a fish out of water. Feeling just a tad bit older.

Any of youguys experiencing this shrinkage thing too?

If you are now 5' 4.5" think about Hoot Gibson and how tall he must be now.

Joe finally found someone shorter than he is!!

At 70, the nurse tells me I am no longer 5'10" - but 5' 8".

And, it has little to do with fitness; I still do all my own yard work, cut up trees, keep the weight off, etc.

She said it has nothing to do with fitness.

Cartilage a little thinner; air gaps reduced, happens to all of us.

The last time I was measured at the Dr Office I was the same height I have always been. (6 foot) I fully expected to be shorter especially after having a bad back for so many years.

I've experienced shrinkage too. Oh, you're writing about altitude. Yes, I was once a 6ft 3in man about town. Now I'm a 6ft 1in old man about town. I want to know how the ad people know this. My Inbox is flooded with geezer stuff like, ED, low testosterone, aches, pains, pills, and cute Russian women ( I have no idea what to do with one of those, see above ). It's a right of passage, I suppose. I am attracted to women, but I deny them my essence.

Joe,

Your experience with your GP and the practice nurse made me smile as I recently went through the same routine myself. Both of those ladies know me well enough, so tactfully avoided any further lectures when I admitted to still smoking the occasional cigarette. I guess they know a lost cause on that subject when they see one.

BP and cholesterol checks proved to be satisfactory as did blood results for liver, kidneys etc. Next was the BMI test which I understand to be the body weight/height ratio for determining general fitness. This gave my height in centimetres and body weight as 182 pounds which I thought a little contradictatory. Being a Luddite with all things metric I asked her for my height in English speaking terms. This threw her a bit and she had to draw up an app on her computer screen for the conversion which she said was 5’ 10”. When I joined the Navy I was 5’ 11 ½” Never quite attaining the desired 6’ that I would have liked but this revelation left me miffed at the loss of one and a half inches over a 63 year period.

So mate it appears that we are both diminishing at the same rate. But at least we are still standing and still here which is better than the alternative. If it keeps accelerating I suppose we could always audition for the seven dwarfs. BTW Val Doonican in the clip below was 5’ 8” when he recorded this one.

I also at first argued with nurse when she said I was 5' 9" instead of my lifelong 5'10", until I saw a standing x-ray of my seriously scoliosis spine which now looks like a pretzel! A couple months ago I spent 6 hours in ER with pain nothing would quell until they shot me up with morphine. That is some GOOD stuff!

Yep. I believe it happens to all of us. I used to be 5' 11" and now I'm 5" 9". Unfortunately weight is another matter.

As Garfield would say - 'not over-weight, under-tall.'

I've had morphine 3 times. First time I had no idea what had been given me I just went out like a burned out light bulb. Second time I had been complaining to the nurse that things stuck in both arms needed to be loosened so I could roll over on to my side because my back was hurting like hell. Boom. Worked great. Third time it was given me for the exact same reason and next day at the same hospital I became sick as a dog and up chucked all over. I had become allergic to it.

I know what you mean about shrinkage. I used to be 10 inches when standing tall. Now I'm down to 8. Shame on me!

I guess I will be one of the few that will admit that what I lost in height, I appear to have gained in girth.
