At random: “What wordy praise can one give such men as these; men who … follow unhesitatingly when in the vicinity of minefields so long as there is the possibility of targets … Men who flinch not with the fathometer ticking off two fathoms beneath the keel … Men who will fight to the last bullet and then start throwing the empty shell cases. These are submariners.” - Eugene Fluckey in his final war patrol report aboard USS Barb |

I gave him a little pat farewell just before they closed him in with his metric blond. He would have been proud though for all the folks that turned out to send him off. He was well loved.

He was in pretty bad shape then and barely able to keep his feet under him, some sort of myopathy of his legs...he was thrilled to see my wife Elsie too, who had a wonderful relation with his wife...The Metric Blond...It's been some time ago. Miss Dex & John.

I remember sitting in Dex's livingroom with Warshot box of ashes sitting right there with us. Oh, I just remembered, you were staying with Dex. You knew that. Me and Blue were staying with Ol'Goat. Can't believe it has been that long. RIP both Warshot and Dex. The only two times I have ever been to Arlington.

COMSUBBBS Posts: 2974 Location: Liverpool, England | Subject: RE: A Sign Let’s face it Dex was a unique character. Despite a few online differences of opinion with him, I did respect and enjoy his hilarious stories and tales of the submarine service. The man was an absolute master wordsmith without the need for correct grammar and punctuation to elaborate his tales. He made a massive difference to you and those beyond with his storytelling and writing skills. The man should be a national treasure. Pedro

However, he does deserve to rest in peace.I must have missed something here, I'm familiar with the arguments, feuds, and odd skirmishes Dex had that were visible here, but please clue me in on this connection of being or not respecting Vietnam Veterans. I'm not trying to be difficult, but my memory is fading, Also I resemble being one, but can't remember Dex being anti either. I completely understood, but still thought it funny when Dex's best friend "Warshot" hated the Japanese and refused to ever buy one. I loved Dex's sea stories, but his story of the guy in DC Dex bought his daily paper from that was killed for his sleeping bag really hit hard. I probably could have not lasted thirty seconds in a room with Dex without getting into an argument, but I appreciated and respected him - I probably could never live up to his take on Duty, Honor, Country. I even thought it was funny when Blue and Dex got in it over something political and Dex anointed Blue with Dex's own unique spelling of "Foreigner". That went on for quite a while, but I believe they made up. I appreciated both, but was amazed at what could ruffle Dex's feathers. Edited by Gil 2019-03-22 6:47 PM
