At random: "I don't know why we have to be down here on this hold down exercise(at the 60th hour). Hell, I went through this on the Thresher (SS 200) during WW ll with a Nip Sea Going Tug hooked onto our screw guards, trying to lift our butts out of the water. They didn't get us then, and these Tin Cans (ours) ain't going to get us now." -- "Hambone" Hamilton SD1 (SS). "Hambone" made 13 war patrols on USS Remora, SS-487, uttered these words in July 1957 during a hold down exercise off Kobe Japan.

Not a member SVWWII (I find no record of him serving aboard Guardfish or assigned to any Relief Crew embarked in a Guardfish Flag Allowance)
TUFANKJIAN, Edward, 93, of Fort Myers, Florida passed away peacefully on March 31, 2019. He will be remembered as a kind and loving father, grandfather and husband and a great friend to everyone he met. Born in Syracuse on July 23, 1925, Edward was the son of the late Norad and Bayzar Tufankjian and at only 8 years old, he began selling newspapers for five cents each on Euclid Avenue to help his family survive through the Great Depression. The men from the firehouse nearby looked after him to make sure he was warm and had something to eat. He graduated from Nottingham High School in 1943 and enlisted in the United States Navy, serving during WWII as a Radioman 3rd Class and most notably on the submarine USS Guardfish (SS-217). Edward also served aboard the USS San Juan (CL 54) and was manning the radio when the message came over that the war was over. He married his first wife Virginia Srabian in 1948, after corresponding with her by letter for the entire 3 years of his active duty. Edward graduated from Syracuse University with a B.S. in Business Administration/Accounting. He then worked for Haberle Congress Brewery in sales for 8 years, which he loved, and General Motors as a Cost Accountant. He then supervised the NYS Lottery Office in Syracuse for 8 years and retired in 2002 as an Income Tax Auditor from the N.Y.S. Department of Taxation and Finance and was given the N.Y.S. Commissioner Award for Outstanding Service. He loved training the junior accountants in the Tax Department and referred to many of them as his "sons". In 1986, he married Dorothy Natale Tufankjian "his sweetheart" and they relocated to Fort Myers, Florida which he referred to as "another day in paradise" quite often. Edward belonged to St. Paul's Armenian Church and served as the Treasurer and Diocesan Delegate. Edward was intelligent, well read, funny, thoughtful and a true gentleman. He loved Syracuse University football and basketball and loved wearing his "SU Orange" apparel. Edward devoted his life to his family and had a heart of gold. Besides his parents, Edward is predeceased by his first wife Virginia; oldest daughter, Diane; brothers, Frank and John; step-daughter, Rorie Palmieri.
