STONE, Kermit Kelly. Jr., 57, of Portsmouth, Ohio, passed away, May 13, 2019 at his residence. He was born in Portsmouth, Ohio, March 21, 1962, a son of Kermit Stone Sr. and the late Billie Gilbert Stone. Kelly was a member of the Indiana and Kentucky Regional Counsel of Carpenters. A United States Navy Veteran, Kelly received his distinguished Silver Dolphins for being a qualified submariner aboard the USS. Swordfish (SSN-579). He was an avid history buff and all-around handyman. Preceded in death besides his mother are one brother, Joseph Spence. Surviving are his father, Kermit Stone Sr. of South Portsmouth, Kentucky, two sons, Jeremy Eugene Stone of North Port, Florida, Nicholas Kelly Stone (Angela Combs) of Portsmouth, Ohio, one daughter, Brittany Stone of Columbus, Ohio, two sisters, Holly Stone of Grove City, Ohio and Candace Stone of South Bend, Indiana. Memorial services will he held 12 Noon on Thursday, May 15, 2019 at the Roberson Funeral Home in South Shore, Kentucky. Friends may call at the Funeral home from 11 a.m. till the service hour at 12 Noon on Thursday. Burial will follow in Crystal Dawn Cemetery, Quincy, Kentucky. Military graveside services will be by James Dickey American Legion Post 23. KETCHUM, Holly Lee, Jr., was born on September 7, 1924 and passed away on Tuesday, May 14, 2019. Mr Ketchum was a resident of Lenox, Massachusetts at the time of passing. Born in Long Beach, CA., on September 7, 1924 to the late Holly L. and Frances Ketchum, he attended Compton High School and was a 1942 graduate. After high school, Lee Joined the United States Navy where he served during WWII as a submariner for 6 years [CSD-41, CSD-142, USS Picuda, USS Corporal, USS Tusk, USS Medregal, USS Ex-U-S513]. He qualified in submarines in USS Picuda in 1945 and was TM2(SS) when released by the Navy.


BUTLER, Daniel B., 61, of Lecanto, FL, passed away on May 12, 2019. He was born in Wilmington, Delaware on April 5, 1958 to Mary (Campbell) Butler and the late John Butler. He enlisted in the United States Navy in September 1976 and proudly served as a machinist mate on numerous nuclear power submarines. While attending the Naval Nuclear Power School in Orlando in 1977, he met his wife Pamela and they were married in 1979. In June 1986, Dan received his commission as a limited duty officer. His career took them to numerous duty stations on both the east and west coasts, Hawaii and Guam. Their daughter, Kelly, was born in Honolulu, Hawaii during Dan's assignment to the Pearl Harbor Naval Reactors Office. Although Dan's career included many challenging and exciting duty stations, his assignments to deep submergence vehicles Seacliff and Turtle from 1992 to 1995 were some of the most memorable experiences. Dan's final duty of his distinguished Naval career was as the Engineer Officer for the Advanced SEAL Delivery Systems Fleet Introduction Team. After his retirement, he continued his work with the ASDS project through Oceaneering International. Dan's love of underwater exploration led him to become a certified diving instructor. His diving adventures led him from the Bahamas to the Cayman and British Virgin Islands, Truk Lagoon to the Great Barrier Reef. In the early 1980s, Dan discovered the beauty of the Florida springs and became a certified cave diver. He enjoyed the challenges of the technology and navigating these new dive sites. His quick wit, patience and incredibly methodical ways of doing things made him a great dive buddy and friend. A 20-year resident of Citrus County, he was a member of the Sturgeon base submarine veterans' group and could always tell a good sea story. He will be missed by his many friends and family. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Pamela, daughter Kelly, mother Mary, and brothers Mark and Craig. Published in Citrus County Chronicle on May 16, 2019


GRAY, Lynn Hyrum, 97, passed away on May 14, 2019. He was greeted on the other side by his wife Joye Fage Gray whom he married in 1945. After Joye passed away he was briefly married to LaVonne Evans who also preceded him in death. Lynn was born October 8, 1921, in Lehi, Utah to Hyrum Richard Gray and Charlotte Austin (Gray). He and Joye are parents of two sons and four daughters; Vicky (Roy) Tamietti, Orem, Utah, Jeanette (Dan) Hunter, Elko, Nevada, Carla (Lynn) Lott, Lehi, Utah, Wayne Fage Gray (Eldann Chandler) San Diego, California, Brian George Gray, San Diego, California, Darlene (Jeff) Pico, Gold Canyon, Arizona.HEe received education and training as an Electronics Technician while serving in the US Navy during World War II in the South Pacific. He was a submariner who was part of an elect group, just 2 percent of the Navy's fleet then who served on submarine war patrols. As a Master Electrician he taught at the Trade Tech along with working in his field of expertise. He wrote a book describing his war experiences for his family. Lynn enjoyed bird watching and outdoors activities and was a Master Camper. He and Joye served an LDS Temple Mission to Manilla, Philippines. He is survived by 15 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren and one sister Joyce (Jack) Phillips, of Pleasant Grove, Utah. Buried in Orem City Cemetery, 1520 North 800 East, Orem, UT. Published in Deseret News from May 16, 2019.


HEFLEY, Randy Boyd, 66, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 9, 2019. He was much loved and will be missed by family and friends alike. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 pm on Saturday, May 18, 2019 at Charlotte Avenue Church of Christ, 339 Charlotte Ave., Rock Hill with Mr. David Pharr officiating. Visitation will follow. Born in Rock Hill, SC, on August 7, 1952, Randy was a son of the late Marion Boyd Hefley and the late Eva Grace Goodman Hefley. Randy was a US Navy veteran from 1970-1974, where he served in Europe as a marine mechanic on the submarine USS Tiru (SS-416) and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. He was retired after 44 years of service with Resolute Forest Products, formerly Bowater Corporation. He faithfully served as deacon for several years and elder for 20 years of Charlotte Avenue Church of Christ in Rock Hill. Surviving are his loving wife of 46 years, Janis Elaine Tennyson Hefley; his two sons, Craig (Jennifer) Hefley of Rock Hill and Ryan (Vanessa) Hefley of York; grandchildren, Jacob, Mason, Morgan and Jackson Hefley; and his sisters, Linda (Johnny) Cassidy, Ann (Bill) Holcombe and Dawn (Trey) Dotson. FINSTAD Lloyd Henry., 94 of Inverness, FL, was born August 12, 1924 in Chicago to Henry and Louise (nee Larsen) Finstad and passed away May 13, 2019. Lloyd was a proud veteran of WWII, serving in the Pacific theatre aboard the submarine USS Hawkbill (SS-366). Lloyd was the husband of Shirley E. (nee Knaak) Finstad; father of Richard (Cynthia) Finstad and Ron (Diana) Finstad; grandfather of four; great-grandfather of five; and brother of the late Lorraine Helwig. Visitation will be Tuesday, May 21, 2019 from 3:00 PM until the time of the Funeral Service at 6:00 PM at Lauterburg & Oehler Funeral Home, 2000 E. Northwest Highway, Arlington Heights. Interment will be private


LEDWICK, Marshall J., 77, of Center Moriches, NY made his final journey home on May 14, 2019. He was a husband of Valerie Cornwall, father of Troy (Kathy) Ledwick, and Diana (Dave) Tobin; gandfather of Heather Carroll, Ray Ledwick, Emily Tobin and Jackson Ledwick; and great-grandfather of Aria Bencini. Marshall had a successful pizzeria, and retail business. Marshall was a proud United States Navy Veteran and served as a submariner on the USS Entemedor (SS-340) during the Cuban missile crisis. He later became an airline pilot and flight instructor. He crossed the " Pond" on the H.M.S. Bounty. He was a gourmet cook and loved to prepare meals for family and friends. Interment at Mt. PECORARO, John Thomas, of Austin, TX, passed away May 3, 2019, in Dallas, TX after a long, courageous battle with Lymphoma and thyroid cancer. John was born in Columbus, Ohio on June 29, 1955 to John & Elizabeth Pecoraro. After graduating from Farmington High School, he served in the US Navy aboard a nuclear submarine. Upon discharge from the Navy, he attended Texas State Technical Institute in Waco, Texas and graduated on August 14, 1981 with an Associate of Applied Science degree in Electronic Technology. He moved to Austin, Texas and attended Durham Nixon-Clay Business College, completing a course in Computer Programming on March 18, 1985. John worked for the City of Austin for many years. John is preceded in death by his sister, Linda Pecoraro Wells and brother Sam Pecoraro. He is survived by his parents, John & Elizabeth Pecoraro, brother James Pecoraro, sisters, Janice Street (Curtis), Joyce Olsen (Jim), Frances Pecoraro and Theresa Pecoraro. KUS, Christopher Michael, was born on May 21, 1984 and passed away on Monday, May 13, 2019. Christopher was a resident of Oak Point, Texas at the time of passing. Christopher served honorably for 15 years as a Submariner in the United States Navy.


SPARKS, Kermit Ammon, was born on January 7, 1945 and passed away on Thursday, May 16, 2019. Kermit was a resident of Vichy, Missouri at the time of passing. Kermit proudly served his Country in the United States Navy on a U.S. Nuclear Submarine. In addition to his parents Kermit A. SR and Mae Sparks, he was preceded in death by his son Kermit Ammon Sparks III.


PENSE, Clair Ernest, was born Dec. 21, 1927 in Bonesteele, S.D. (at home) to parents, Charles Abraham Pense and Grace Elizabeth Pense (Pinkham) and passed away May 7, 2019, in Gresham (at home). His wife of over 50 years, Violet Naomi Pense; and daughter, Virginia Rae Pearce preceded him in death. He is survived by children, Cynthia June Reynolds (Bob) and Dr. Stanley Clair Pense (Sharon); 17 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren. Clair graduated from Gresham High School in 1945 and proudly served as a Submariner in World War II and the Korean War. He later attended Multnomah College (later merged with University of Portland) and attended Portland State. He was appointed and later elected as Multnomah County Surveyor in the 1960's and later became a Land Surveyor in private practice until retirement. He was actively involved in many organizations and service clubs. He was one of the founders and a past president of the Professional Land Surveyors of Oregon, a past president of The Engineering and Architects Council of Oregon, served as an advisor for Civil Engineering Technology Committee at MHCC and was a lifelong member of the American Congress of Surveying and Mapping, American Legion and a designer of Heroes Memorial Park at Main St. Park in Gresham, Ore. He has been actively involved in politics as a proponent of things that promoted ethical and moral practices according to the U.S. Constitution. He would continually submit letters to public officials including our Presidents advocating that the laws were for the people and of the people. He would seal the back of his letters with "In God We Trust." He served mankind well, being interested in others and loving his family and friends. He was forever teaching his great-grandchildren and very patiently learning from them as well. In his retirement he enjoyed working with the Submariner Veterans Group and Willamette National Cemetery. His love of country was very passionate. We are at peace in knowing he is with our mother and grandmother and most of all with His Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. RATHBUN, Morris, was born in Elkhorn, Wisconsin passed away April 26, 2019. Morris was the son of Madalene (Kohen) Rathbun and Morris Truman Rathbun. He is survived by his loving wife, three children, four grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by one grandchild. Pete serviced in the US Navy from May 1957 to May 1959. He was a submariner on the USS Barracuda (SSK-1) and USS Hardhead (SS-365). He resided in NY for 35 years, and Wantagh NY for 22 years. Morris ran multiple marathons, most notable: New York City, Long Island & Marine Corps. He was an avid Green Bay Packers fan. He also shared his passion for Opera, classical music, ballet/dance and art with his family with many visists to Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, art museums and other venues in New York City. He retired for NY AT&T Systems Planning to Bradenton Florida. Private Memorial Services will be held on Saturday May 25, 2019 at Meadow Croft Club House from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers please donate to the Friends of the Manatee County of Animals Services. HARRISON, Richard John, of Mystic entered eternal rest Wednesday, May 15, 2019. He was born March 15, 1942, in Hartford, to the late John Robert Harrison, from Archibald, Pa., and Miriam Madonna (Doherty) Harrison, from Holyoke, Mass. His father, John, served in the United States Navy and growing up, Richard and his family lived throughout the United States, settling in Holyoke, Mass., where he graduated from Holyoke High School in 1960. After graduation, he enlisted in the Navy, proudly serving as a Sonar Technician (STS1) on nine submarines. He was very proud to be a Plankowner of the USS Guardfish (SSN-612). He was awarded a National Defense Service Medal and a Vietnam Service medal and remained an active member of the United States Submarine Veterans. His service to his country was a lifelong source of pride. Richard was a devoted Christian and had a heart and passion for prison ministry. In 1990, he founded Fellowship House Ministries, an aftercare and recovery support program for ex-offenders and their families. For many years, he ministered in prisons throughout New England, earning Prison Fellowship Volunteer of the Year honors during his tenure. Most recently, Richard worked at Mohegan Sun, Sharp Training, and Masonicare. He was an active member of Bishop Seabury Church for 35 years, serving as a lay reader and Vestry member. Richard loved spending time with his family and especially enjoyed family gatherings. He was a faithful husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend and was a blessing to those whose lives he touched. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of nearly 54 years, Sandra (Boczon) Harrison, of Mystic; his daughter and son-in-law, Laurie and Mace Lewis, of Mystic; his daughter and son-in-law, Amy and Daniel Ganolli, of East Haven; grandchildren, Matthew and Erin Lewis, Andrew Lewis, Aaron Lewis, and Harrison Ganolli; sister and brother-in-law Joanne and Harold Henry, of Harwich, Mass.; sister and brother-in-law Susan and James Weber, of Naperville, Ill.; sister and brother-in-law Linda and Robert Savage, of Westhampton, Mass.; and brother John Harrison, of Holyoke, Mass. He is predeceased by his sisters, Judith Kaplan and Nancy Harrison. His memory will be cherished by many nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren, and friends. PENDERGAST, Terrence W., of Preston died at home after a long illness May 17 surrounded by his loving wife of nearly 60 years, Kathleen, and his family. He was born in Washington D.C. in 1936 and went on to proudly serve as a Quartermaster in the United States Navy submarine service, retiring in 1974. He went on to enjoy a second career with General Dynamics Electric Boat Division retiring in 1996. At the center of Terry's life was his beloved family. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his three daughters and their husbands, Daryl Ann and Joseph Hurlock of Griswold, Carolyn and Terry Sumner of Griswold, and Alison and Jeff Albert of Pittsburgh Pa. In addition, he is survived by his loving grandchildren, Brian Hurlock, Emily Hurlock, Rachel Sumner and husband, Joel Lenda; and his great-granddaughter, Brianna Hurlock; and sisters-in-law, Eileen Beale and Margaret Ward. Terry was predeceased by his infant son, Kevin; and his grandson, Terry Sumner Jr. The family will greet relatives and friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, May 20 at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street in historic downtown Mystic. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 21 at St. Catherine of Sienna Church in Preston.
