SEARS, David Freeman, died mid-May 2019. He was born to Kenneth and Jane Sears on July 28, 1937 in Seattle Washington. He was raised in Seattle, Portland Oregon and Stockton, California. He graduated from Stockton College High School in 1955 and attended the U.S. Naval Academy from 1955 until his graduation with highest honors in 1959. After serving on a destroyer for 38 months, he married his college sweetheart, Catherine Neos of Bethlehem Pennsylvania, in September of 1962 while they were enroute to submarine training in Groton, Connecticut. They served in the submarine service for the next 17 years culminating in 4 years as Commanding Officer on the USS Will Rogers (SSBN-659) followed by 2 years as the Current Strategic Operations Officer on the Staff of the Commander in Chief, Atlantic. From this position they retired and moved to Vallejo, California in 1979. While in the Navy they were blessed with 9 children: David of Elk Grove (Teri), Nichola of Loyalton (Shawn), Jason of Elk Grove (Edith), Anna of Ojai, Raechelle of Elk Grove (Kevin), Jonathan of Vallejo, Rebekah of Elk Grove (Doug) James of Benicia, and Michael of Chico (Leah). After leaving the naval service they added Audrell of Vacaville to the family. They were then blessed with 21 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Following retirement from the Navy, David became a professor at the California Maritime Academy and during his 25 years there he saw it move from a special school to a campus of the California State University system. David retired as a Professor Emeritus in 2005 and could be seen around town as a volunteer for the Benicia Police Department. David is survived by his brother Murven (Helen) of Mendocino, California, and many nieces and nephews. Committal will be at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery alongside his beloved wife of nearly 50 years Catherine, also known as Bunny in her youth and as Kay to her many friends of later years. ROWE, Charles Alfred Jr., 83, of Beech Grove, Va., passed away Tuesday, May 7, 2019. Born in Blairstown, N.J., on Feb. 29, 1936, he was the son of the late Charles Alfred and Ruth Matlock Rowe Sr. Charlie was extremely proud of his U.S. Navy career, especially the years he spent on submarines. He could tell sea stories for hours on end, keeping everyone entertained. He earned the Navy Good Conduct award five times, the European Occupation Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and both the Armed Forces and Navy Expeditionary medals. Charlie's Navy career spanned 20 years from January 1955 to July 1975, and included the following notable assignments: USS Macon (CA 132), May 1955 – May 1957, Participated in the Suez Crises of 1956; U.S. Naval Facility (NAVFAC), Tudor Hill Southampton, Bermuda, May 1957 – January 1959; USS Grant County (LST 1174), July 1960 – December 1963, Participated in the Cuban Missile Crisis; USS Torsk (SS-423) May 1964 – August 1964; USS Simon Bolivar (SSBN-641) August 1964 – September 1968; Naval Recruiting Station, New York December 1968 – July 1971; and USS Harlan County (LST 1176) February 1972 – July 1975. One of Charlie's passions was motorcycles. He had many different types over the years, however his favorite two were a 1989 HD Ultra Classic Electra Glide and a 2008 HD Softail Deluxe. He would often ride with his daughter, Robin, and her husband, Darrell, and grandson, Daniel on grandiose adventures to Ohio, West Virginia, New Jersey and to Rolling Thunder with his Harley Chapter. He loved to travel! He is survived by his beloved wife, Mildred Norvelle; sons, Peter Rowe (Peggy), of Buford, Ga., and Kevin Rowe, of Shipman, Va.; daughters, Robin Fitzgerald (Darrell), of Beech Grove, Va., and Antonia Florence (Bruce), of Ruckersville, Va.; brothers, Ernest Rowe, of Washington, N.J., and George Rowe, of Phillipsburg, N.J.; a sister, Lizzi May Rowe, of Oxford, N.J.; grandchildren, Hannah Rowe, Daniel Fitzgerald, Dwayne Fitzgerald, Carrie Fitzgerald Day, Ben Florence, Donald Florence, Tucker Florence, and Brandon Nusspickel; and great-grandchildren, Danielle Fitzgerald, Dawson Fitzgerald, Jenna Fitzgerald, Landen Day, Lilyahna Day, Isabella Florence and Temperance Florence. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Russell Rowe, and a sister, Mary Rowe. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Shenandoah House, c/o the Augusta Health Foundation P.O. Box 1000, Fishersville, VA 22939. A Celebration of Life will be held at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, May 25, at Byrum-Parr Funeral Home by Rob Mansfield with military honors by American Legion Post 16. ORTH, Martin Joseph passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on March 30, 2019, the day after his 80th birthday in Merrimack, NH. Mr. Orth was born in Jersey City, NJ, and raised in Guttenberg and West New York in Hudson County. He attended Memorial High School but left early, in 1956 at the age of 17, to pursue his dream of traveling the world and serving his country in the United States Navy. He proudly spent a decade in the US Navy and 2 years in the Naval Reserve until a near fatal car accident in 1967 sidelined his return to active service. Mr. Orth's active naval service included duty on various destroyers (USS McGowan (DD-678), USS McCaffery (DD/DDE-860)) and submarines (USS George Washington (SSBN-598), USS Ethan Allen (SSBN-608), USS Croaker (SS/SSK/AGSS/IXSS-246), USS Tusk (SS-426)). His worldwide deployments included the north Atlantic to the Caribbean, the Mediterranean and Suez Canal to call at various Near Eastern ports and Karachi, Pakistan. He was one of the last seamen to cross the Arctic Circle in September 1960 on the USS McGowan before its decommissioning in November of that year. Mr. Orth was a sonar man and achieved the rank of Petty Officer, 2nd class. Upon discharge from the U.S. Navy, he moved to Piscataway, NJ and worked for AT&T for 20 years, in various managerial positions including as a District Manager. An active member of the Piscataway community, Mr. Orth was a member of the Superchiefs Band Parents Association, a former President of the High School Athletics Booster Club, coached and was actively involved in various town-wide recreation sports. He was elected and served on the Piscataway Board of Education from 1985 through 1989. In retirement, Mr. Orth lived in Point Pleasant Beach, NJ and Huntingdon Valley, PA. In November of 2014, he relocated to Hooksett, NH and soon fell in love with and was adopted by the Granite State and its motto "Live Free or Die." Marty was the patriarch of a blended family that included his set of twins and his long-time partner and mother of 3 daughters. He is survived by his son Joseph Orth and wife Martyna of Brick, NJ, and daughter Jody Orth and husband Edward Mount of Bayville, NJ, Janet Hansen of Hooksett, NH, his companion of nearly 31 years and step-daughters Karen DeBonis and husband Jonathan of Denver, CO, Christine Hansen of Newport, RI and Jennifer Goodhart and husband Joshua of Atlanta, GA, a brother, Richard Orth of Pompton Lakes, NJ, niece Debbie Orth of Jupiter, FL, nephews Jeffrey Orth of South Plainfield, NJ and Patrick Kelly of Newton, NJ, as well as 11 grandchildren, and former spouse and lifelong friend, Carol Orth of Lake Hiawatha, NJ. A memorial celebration of his life will take place in New Jersey on Sunday, June 9, 2019 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus in Toms River, NJ.
