Walt,
I assume she had her batteries and fuel oil removed. Each of her two batteries had 126 cells with each cell weighing in at over a ton. That is 252 tons lighter just due to the batteries. I don't know the weight of all the fuel tanks. |

Hope they get her positioned over her supports before the water recedes. Thanks for the info, had completely forgot about Ballast and floating. Been dealing with Beer and Peanuts too long. |

Is there a way to put pressure in the boat to push water out (in case of a hull leak)? She has been dry for how many decades? Just 2 or 3 PSI would do wonders.

My reserve submarine was decommissioned and placed at Terminal Island for our one weekend a month meetings. The batteries were removed - I assume 126 at one ton apiece, and concrete was poured in to somewhat compensate. All the torpedoes were also removed along with many of the racks to make more room for classes in the AB. The Roncador sat very high in the water, I'm guessing around 10 feet.
The color scheme of the Batfish seems unique to me, and I like it. My boat was Guppy III, and while I liked our big sail better, I like the silhouette of a boat minus the three puffs topside better.

I was aboard Roncador 50 years ago this month at Long Beach. I was leaving Cusk, (we moored along side), and I showered on Roncador before going to the airport. Other than that I didn't get to look around any. |

When I went from reserve to my two year active I was assigned to Terminal Island to wait for active duty orders. Growing up in the area I didn't appreciate the Terminal Island base as much as I should have. Hard to believe when you go by there now that something so big, and so major could be all gone.
In high school we use to go to the Long Beach Pike, and laugh at the drunk sailors walking around it trying to chase women. We never thought we ever be one of them.
My first day of active duty I was in the barrack for sailors being discharged, and when lights out came I was depressed. It hit me I in this for the next two years, and from my rack I could see the nearby lights of home. I was all by myself when I remember like it was yesterday two drunk sailors came in to the barracks saying Long Beach was the best f____g liberty port in the whole world.

If you get to the Maritime Museum in Sydney harbour, there is the former HMA Ships Vampire (Daring class destroyer), Advance (Attack class patrol boat) and Onslow (Oberon class submarine). Onslow is not exactly in diving trim The batteries were over 400 tons; 448 cells at roughly 1 ton each. The first lieutenant would have difficulty calculating a diving trim. |
