ROWE, Dairel Preston, 94, died January 9, 2020. One of 5 children, Dairel was born in Farmington, Arkansas on July 8, 1925. The family, like many, decided to move to California to escape the Dust Bowl in the 1930’s. Settling in the Bakersfield area, Dairel set out on his own at the age of 14, becoming the hardworking, dedicated person that he would always be. His early career began as an orderly at Kern County Hospital. With his Mother’s permission, he enlisted in the Navy at the age of 17. He was a Submarine Torpedoman and was proud to earn his “Dolphin” pin, which was very important to him because it signified that he participated in multiple active duty assignments and was a submarine specialist. Upon his leaving the military in March 1946, he travelled with fellow Navy buddies around the country until the money ran out. Returning to Bakersfield he worked as a tradesman until he landed his dream job as a Bakersfield City Fireman. He achieved the rank of Engineer and served for 28 years. Dairel’s true passion was building his log cabin in Dubois, Wyoming. He crafted every piece by hand, including windows and furniture. He loved to hunt, fish, and camp and was an excellent cook for everything he caught. He continued his craftsmanship later in life by making games, trivets, children’s furniture and more with the same loving detail. Dairel had a wonderful life with his wife Anita Jo (Ginger) Rowe and celebrated 37 years of marriage. He was greatly loved by all of his family members. A true gentleman and one of the greatest generation. He was honest, honorable and humble. We will miss him. Services will be January 17, 2020. Military burial and Bakersfield City Fire Department Honor Guard at Bakersfield National Cemetery at 10:45am. Memorial service at Doughty-Calhoun-O’Meara Funeral home at 1:00pm. Luncheon at Mexicali located at 631 18th St, Bakersfield at 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers, you are invited to donate to the Bakersfield City Fire Department.
