I have been doing family research as a hobby for some years.

I recently came across a military record of one of my mother's first cousins.

He served on a type of ship I never heard of before:

Yep. Auxiliary Repair, the G for gasoline.
There were lots of AR designation. Including just plain old AR and ARB for battle damage, ARL for light, etc.
( I spent 4 years on the same skimmer and learned a lot of this stuff.

There was an ARD - floating drydock - in Guam back in 1965/1967 era. Lifted my minesweep out of the water on each WESTPAC deployment. It was a non-self-propelled drydock but had a navy crew and was complete with berthing spaces, a galley and mess decks, diesel engines for electrical power and to power the flooding pumps.

For years, we had HMAS Stalwart, a dedicated repair ship. Was supposed to be used for deployments away but very frequently had ships alongside at the main Sydney base - I presume for normal 'internal maintenance' (SMP) routines.
