At random: George Washington Endorsed the use of the first American submarine, David Bushnell's TURTLE, during the Revolution. Following the vessel's attack on a British man-of-war, he discussed the potential use of submarines in a letter to Thomas Jefferson.

I was trying to take my walk this morning but between the high wind chill and the 20 to 25 knots of wind it was not going to happen.
Got a nice photo of the beach surf and white caps though.
View is looking due North up Puget Sound.
I'm surprised the picture came out so sharp as the wind was knocking me around like crazy.

Nice shot!

I'll caption this photo "The Sea Is Calling Me"

Your camera may have an option for stability control. I've seen that feature on some digital cameras.

Bonnie and I walked the boardwalk in Des Moines a few times on valentines day - was breezy down there as well but not that much.  Maybe 15-20 so'wester.  Made me want to be sailing!

Yeah, it would have been a 30 minute down wind sleigh ride to Port Townsend from Edmonds. Would have been a fun ride but would have hated to have to jibe in that weather. Knock the stick right out of her.
I've raced on a Cal 40 for the Shilshole Bay Yacht Club in weather like that. I was harnessed in to the mast (I was working the fore deck, we were flying a 'shute) and had the lee rail underwater and it half the way up my boot jammed onto the toe rail. Exciting as hell!!!

Now put all those timbers into the bush, light the fire and then you can see why fires continue. Many councils have stopped the routine hazard reduction clearing and we end up with 'hot' fires that kill trees, rather than the 'normal' fires that just singe them.

Keep that picture for the desktop. Got one yesterday of two massive boulders that have blocked a Snowy Mountains Highway. Got it as desktop but don't know how to save it as a folder.
We had fires and in a little over a week, many areas have received over six months rainfall. We have had over 30 inches; another 3 plus since last night, mostly gentle soaking rain. Most dams are full or close to full again.

Often wondered what inspired folks to go sailing in that kind of weather? Cold wet and miserable. About like a Port Lookout in a Winter run.

The beach is part of a city park and also a dedicated Marine Sanctuary. They don't like it if you start chopping wood and hauling it off. What ever washes up on the beach stays until it washes away.

Small world - I raced on a Cal 40, Maria, for 5-6 years. That was back in the 80's.  I recently found her on the wild and wooly web - renamed and having a cool new life and renamed "Swell" - https://swellvoyage.com/about/about-swell/

What was the name of your boat - the Cal you raced on?   Did you ever do the Cal 40 races on Lake Union?  It was the "Roaring Forties" group I think.

The Cal 40 was "Ragna" and moored on "C" dock at Shileshole Marina where I had my slip. The crew were all skippers of our own boats. Made things interesting. I've sailed the "Duck Dodge" on Lake union when I moored there. One of our crew on Ragna was a co-founder of the Duck Dodge. You want to stay far away from the buoy at the south end. Really shallow there.

Not this morning but last night.  Weather Bureau has predicted a sunny day for today, it is that.  They also predicted a hail and rainstorm for early yesterday evening and it happened.  Hail stones about 18 mm (3/4 in) diameter, lasted about five minutes before the rain took over.
First time the predictions have been correct since the end of November; that's a bit of a worry.
Damage being reported in many different areas.

Interesting, I had hail, about 3/8 of and Inch in size, yesterday evening. Beautiful day today, clear and sunny but low 40's F in temp.

Listening to news from UK on the radio just before 0700; rain fall 112 mm in 24 hours.  Reasonable amount but nothing like the 300 we come to expect when the storms hit.  Living at the top of a slope sometimes does have advantages; just not trying to walk up from the local shops or final part of a morning walk.  Second gear stuff in a manual.
