At random: There are more airplanes at the bottom of the ocean than there are submarines in the sky; therefore I chose submarines over aviation.

Subject: Old battery cells scandal

As I remember it (and this is really foggy) some time in the mid 1970's there was a flurry of activity with Naval Investigative Service, Base Police, Groton and State Police [perhaps also FBI, etc] scurrying about looking hither thither and yon for some stolen batteries. Apparently what happened was some enterprising folks had noticed that batteries that had been removed during a changeout or two were languishing in the far back part of SubBase New London near the recycling and scrap section. These folks hotwired a fork lift and hoiisted several cells onto a flatbed truck and drove it out the back gate. The loading took place at night and the truck left first thing in the morning. Over several days the people had made off with somewhere around 150 cells.

When the loss was noticed, the crap hit the blower big time. The cells were found in a farm field nearby where some folks were chainsawing the tops of the cell jar and removing the plates to be sold as lead scrap.

Of course we who were not involved discussed endlessly how we would have done the deed and not been caught.

The culprits were soon caught and included at least two or three base security folks, and some sailors and base shop personnel.

Anyone remember this? Fill in with accurate information???

No, but I did see five years ago that some sub batteries were stolen in Spain.  They were recovered.

"The culprits were soon caught..."

From battery cells to prison cells.

A friend who read this BBS called me and he wanted to chat about this thread.
He was a DC Electrician on several boats. He was saying that these jumpers, used to cut out a cell, weighed 84 pounds apiece. Does this sound right to you guys?
