At random: The USS Blenny SS 324, on her last patrol of WW II sank 63 vessels. One by torpedo and 62 by deck gunfire, demolition charges set by boarding parties or by burning. On several occasions shotguns were fired through the boats bottoms. These were all vessels under the 500 ton JANAC limit for tonnage sunk and not counted in the "official" totals or ships sunk. This is also a record for the most vessels ever sunk by a submarine on one patrol.

PIERCE, Gregory Mark, 64, died July 1, 2020 peacefully at his home in Ogden, Utah after a long, strenuous battle with cancer. He was born on September 1, 1955 in Tacoma, Washington to Helen Rose Glismann and Woodruff Charles Pierce. He was baptized as a member of Elim Lutheran Church. His father was in the Air Force, which allowed the family to travel around the world during his childhood. They lived in Pakistan, Japan, and then several stateside cities before finally settling down in Ogden Utah. He graduated from Bonneville High School in 1973 then joined the Navy during the Vietnam War. He served 6 years as petty officer 2nd class (EM2) as an electrician on the nuclear submarine USS Puffer (SSN-652). During his time in the military he was stationed in The Philippines, Hawaii, San Diego, and ended his Naval career in San Francisco. After his Naval service he returned home and pursued higher education at Weber State University. It was during this time that he met his soulmate Cindy Moore whom he married soon after on June 4, 1987. He worked as an Aircraft Electrician at Hill Air Force Base for many years before moving on and working as a journeyman electrician in the private sector. When Greg was not hard at work, he could always be found at the nearest golf course, settling into a good book, or listening to his favorite music. He also loved a good cruise with his friends, his family, and his wife ever since their first cruise together on The Sun Viking for their honeymoon. But most of all, he loved spending time with his wife, his kids, and his grandkids. He is survived by his wife of 33 years Cynthia Sue Pierce, sons Christopher (Brittany), Jason (Denise), daughter Holly, and his grandchildren Cole, Reese, Braxton, and Parker. He is also survived by his older brother Michael Pierce, sister-in-law Cheryl Carter (Arnold), brother-in-law Michael Moore, nephews Brandon and Jody, niece Stefanie (Jesse), and his favorite aunt, Carol Larsen. He is preceded in death by his mother Helen, his father Woody, and his sister-in-law Iola. Thanks to all the nurses and doctors at The Huntsman Cancer Institute, CNS Home Health Care and Hospice, and the VA throughout his illness. Special thanks to Dr. Wallace Ackerly, Nicole Robinson, Terry, Carrie, Deanna, and Andrea. Additional thanks to the loving folks at Community United Methodist Church who have been praying, visiting, and supporting the family during this 7-year battle. Your love and care have been invaluable. Honoring Greg's wishes, he will be cremated under the care of Myers Mortuary. Due to current restrictions a limited in person service for immediate family only will be held Thursday July 9, 2020 at 10:00 am at Community United Methodist Church. Graveside services will immediately follow at Evergreen Memorial Park. The family invites all who wish to attend to join both services via livestream which will be available at gregpiercefuneral.com. In lieu of flowers the family would like you to consider donating to The Huntsman Cancer Institute to help others in their fight against cancer. Published by LegacyPro July 7, 2020.

Edward A. Burkhalter Jr., Navy vice admiral and intelligence official, dies at 91

July 3, 2020 at 4:34 p.m. EDT
Edward A. “Al” Burkhalter Jr., a retired Navy vice admiral who served on nuclear submarines early in his career and later held high-ranking intelligence positions, including as an adviser to the CIA, died July 1 at a hospital in Annapolis. He was 91.
The cause was a heart attack, said a son-in-law, J.D. Baldwin.
Adm. Burkhalter entered the Navy’s submarine corps soon after his graduation from the U.S. Naval Academy and was among the first generation of sailors in the nation’s nuclear-powered submarine fleet in the late 1950s.
As navigator of the USS Seadragon, he had a major role in planning the submarine’s route as it made its way past Greenland, then through the Northwest Passage in the Arctic Ocean. The nuclear-powered Seadragon  made international news in 1960 when it became the Navy’s third submarine to reach the North Pole and the second, after the USS Skate, to ascend to the surface at the top of the world.
Adm. Burkhalter later served aboard other submarines, including a tour in the late 1960s as commander of the Skate. He had a planning role in a top-secret program in the early 1970s, Operation Ivy Bells, in which U.S. military and intelligence units attached listening devices to undersea Soviet communication cables. From 1974 to 1976, Adm. Burkhalter was commander of a submarine squadron at a now-defunct U.S. naval base on the Italian island of Sardinia.
He spent the rest of his military career at the Pentagon as an intelligence officer, including as deputy director of the Defense Intelligence Agency. From 1981 to 1986, he was the chief military liaison to CIA director William J. Casey, who was a close friend.
Adm. Burkhalter had a key role in preparing intelligence agency budgets before retiring from the Navy as a three-star admiral in 1986. His decorations included the Defense Distinguished Service Medal and the Legion of Merit.
Edward Alan Burkhalter Jr. was born Sept. 15, 1928, in Roanoke, Ala. His father, a World War I veteran, managed a textile mill.
After a year at Auburn University in Alabama, Adm. Burkhalter entered the Naval Academy, graduating in 1951. Following his military career, he operated a consulting firm, Burkhalter Associates, that held contracts with the Defense Department and CIA. He was also board chairman of SteelCloud, a technology and security company based in Northern Virginia. He retired in 2012.
Adm. Burkhalter received the Distinguished Submariner Award from the Naval Submarine League in 2013. For the past 25 years, he lived near the grounds of the Naval Academy and was associated with several organizations supporting the academy’s alumni and athletic activities.
His marriage to Elizabeth Johnstone ended in divorce. His second wife, Rebecca Robinson Lloyd, the widow of a Navy officer who died in a submarine mishap, died in 2016 after 44 years of marriage. Adm. Burkhalter adopted her five children.
Survivors include five children from his first marriage, Susan Green, Clay Burkhalter and Wendy Eck, all of Stonington, Conn., Heather Bessette of Mystic, Conn., and Holly Bosman of Mooresville, N.C.; six children from his second marriage, David Burkhalter of Chicago, Elizabeth Smith of Burke, Va., Susan Baldwin of Hoboken, N.J., Mark Burkhalter of Henderson, Md., Ted Burkhalter of Springfield, Va., and Edward A. Burkhalter III of Alexandria, Va.; 29 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
