HORN, Kenneth LeRoy, 97, of West Des Moines died September 5, 2020. He was born in Elmo, MO to Addie (Perigo) and Guy Horn. After graduating from high school, Ken joined the US Navy during WWII and was assigned to a submarine in the Pacific fleet. He qualified in submarines in USS Pompon (SS-267) in 1945 and was MoMM3(SS) when released by the Navy in 1945. This led him to a career in HVAC where he owned and operated Wycoff-Horn for many years. He later worked for Dahl Sheet Metal in Van Meter until his retirement in the 80's. He lived in Arizona for many years and later moved to Florida. Ken was a generous, caring, loyal and an amazing person. Throughout his life, he enjoyed woodworking, remodeling and gained great satisfaction from passing on his building expertise. He was a member of the Izaak Walton League and one of their former Presidents. He will be greatly missed by his daughters, Karen Patch, Martha Sterns and Becca (Bill) Whiteley; his grandchildren, Kate (Brian Hutzel) Patch, Ryan (Kara) Patch, Allison (Eric) Lambert, Meggan Whiteley, and Devin (Sarah) Whiteley; 9 great-grandchildren and a host of relatives. Ken was preceded in death by his first wife, Vivian in 1960, his second wife, Shirley in 1976; and his companion, Arvella Dick in 2020; his daughters, Linda Shipman and Marjorie Horn; and great-grandson, Luke Whiteley. ZIEGLER Herbert Frederick, Jr., 96, of Leawood Assisted Living, Leawood, Kansas, died peacefully on September 10, 2020 in the presence of his twin daughters. He was born in Kansas City, Mo. March 3, 1924, to Herbert F. Ziegler, Sr. and Florence Schweiger Ziegler. Herb was educated in local grade schools, Rockhurst High School, Kansas City Junior College, then Notre Dame University, where he received his BS in Mathematics at age 19 while participating in the Navy V-12 program. He graduated from the Navy Midshipman's School in Plattsburg, NY in February 1944, and the Navy Submarine School at New London, CT. In 1945, he served aboard the submarine USS Sea Robin (SS-407) on the 3rd war patrol off the coasts of Japan and Korea and was awarded the Navy Commendation Ribbon for his services as Torpedo Data Computer Operator. After the war, he was released from the Navy as a Lt. (junior grade). Using the GI Bill, he spent one year at the University of Fribourg, Fribourg, Switzerland, after which he returned to Kansas City to work for three years in the family produce business, a business he had grown up with. In 1952, at age 28, he started a new career as a Manufacturer's Agent in the Mechanical Power Transmission field. He served as the president of the Herbert F. Ziegler, Jr. Company until his retirement in 1988 at the age of 64. Once again, his life took a new turn. He enrolled in Johnson County Community College as a Liberal Arts student and obtained his Associate of Arts degree in 1993. From there he continued his studies at UMKC, earning a degree in Spanish in 1995. This was followed by some summer courses in Mexico, Spain, and Austria. Herb was a Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Missouri and was President of The Engineers Club of Kansas City from 1973-74. He was a member of the The Interamericano Club, La Causerie Francaise, The Kansas City Swiss Society, The Native Sons of Kansas City, The Westport Historical Society, and The Shawnee Indian Mission Historical Society--among others. Herb liked to write short articles about things that interested him, many of which were published in the Volunteer Voice of the Nelson-Atkins Museum, the SPARK Elderhostel of UMKC, the Kansas City Swiss Society, the Kansas City Star, and the Brown and Gold Club of Johnson County Community College, as well as other local publications. He was preceded in death by his wife of 25 years, Shirley Deines Ziegler, a native of Orchard, Nebraska, on February 6, 1998. Herb is survived by his twin daughters: Amy Florence Fischbach (Dave); and Joan Ziegler Delahunt (Colm); 7 grandchildren; and one sister, Virginia Ziegler Bagby of Kansas City, MO. Herb was predeceased by five siblings, Mary Ann Ziegler Conley Perry, Columbus, Ohio; Joseph Raymond Ziegler, Tulsa, OK.; Dr. John Gerard Ziegler, Ft. Lauderdale, FL; Dorothy Ziegler Hogan Orscheln, Las Vegas, NV and Betty Ziegler Broski, Leawood, KA. . Interment at Calvary Cemetery.
