"A Santa Named Dex"? (well he is a bit on the round side - ho ho ho! - sorry Dexter) Seriously, Dex called me a couple days back and wanted to let me know that he was sending me one of his VERY special items to hang onto for us all (and to eventually pass along to my favorite museum out here I'm sure). It arrived today and you almost feel like you're touching a time machine - this item is definitely from the PAST - from our submarine S-1 SS-105 - It is unique and very special - Thank you Dex for entrusting me with it, it will be taken care of!

A bit of further info: The S-1 was In Hawaii attached to SubDiv 7, SubRon 4 between January 1931 and May 1937 - Picture is from Ric Hedman's "Through The Looking Glass" website...

Now that is a beautiful piece of history...and I have a connection to it, too. My granduncle, CMDR. Vincent J. Moore was an executive officer on her in the early '20's. John, I hope you don't mind if I make a copy of that picture? Would like to show it to my Mother. Uncle Vincent was her Dad's brother. Ric was kind enough to include my uncle's picture and brief history of his
sub career on the S-1 pages.
...AND DEX...or is that "Santa"...you are a marvel...to have that wonderful piece of history in your possession...NOW THAT IS JUST WAY TOO COOL.

Photo is a National Archives image and public domain. That hanger on the back deck of the S-1 became the very first Submarine Rescue Bell, Swede Momson used it to develop the bell and process. Thanks John and Dex.
John may I use the Ashtray on my Looking Glass page? |
